Yanks win 2nd in a row

The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers today by the score of 2-1. This was a great pitching matchup of CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander and they didn't disappoint. CC Sabathia struggled a little bit early but was able to get out of trouble and settle down finishing with 7 shutout innings. He gave up 5 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves came in to pitch the 8th inning and gave up a solo homerun but preservenind the lead. Mariano came on in the ninth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 25th save. The offense didn't do much against Verlander, A-rod hit a solo homerun to right field that barely got out in the seventh and Melky Cabrera had a infield single for a RBI in the same inning. Derek Jeter had a couple of hits and Johnny Damon had a double. Nick Swisher had a double and that was about all the the offense for the game. The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow with Joba Chamberlain on the mound against Edwin Jackson it is also Old Timers Day with the festivities starting on Yes at 11:30AM.

Game 89: Tigers at Yankees

Here are the pregame notes, no lineup yet, I am afraid I won't have that for you before we leave. Game 89: Tigers at Yankees Posted using ShareThis

Yanks go for 2 in a row over Tigers

The New York Yankees will try and win their second consecutive game over the Tigers this afternoon at the Stadium. Today marks the 10 year anniversary of David Cones perfect game and he will be on hand to throw out the first pitch and I am sure they will have some kind of pregame ceremony. I will be heading out to the stadium in about half an hour so not sure if I will have the lineup and notes before then but if not I will be back later with the postgame recap and notes if any. There was one not from yesterday that I forgot to mention. Sergio Mitre will be called up and be the fifth starter on Tuesday against Baltimore. He has been performing well at AAA and the Yankees feel Alfredo Aceves is too valuable out of the bullpen. Enjoy the game today and I will try to put something up before I leave if there is anything.

Yanks come out of break strong

The Yankees kind of had rookie Luke French on the ropes early but couldn't knock him out although they did make him throw a lot of pitches. The Yankees got to the bullpen in the 7th though and took a 5-3 lead. A.J. Burnett was very erractic pitching 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, with 5 walks and only 1 strikeout, he just wasn't sharp at all although he did battle and keep the team in the game. The thing is with A.J. and CC you don't want to hear that, they are the guys you expect to go out and dominate and get you the win. Phil Hughes was a savr once again pitching 2 shutout innings, striking out 6, he just looks so calm and confident out there on the mound and for good reason. The offense had their big hit when Big Tex blasted a 3 run homerun in the 7th inning to give the Yankees the lead. Melky Cabrera had a big hit but Jorge Posada was thrown out at the plate to erase that and Johnny Damon had a couple of hits. Mark Teixeira besides having the big homerun also had a couple of other hits. Hideki Matsui had 2 hits and a rbi and Robinson Cano had 2 hits as well as Derek Jeter. A-rod and Nick Swisher were the only guys in the lineup without a hit. Mariano Rivera came on for the save and we look forward to a great matchup tomorrow with CC Sabathia taking on Justin Verlander tomorrow at 1:05 on the Yes network.

Detroit at Yankees(2nd Half begins)

The New York Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers at 7:05 tonight from the Stadium. The game is on the YES network. A.J. Burnett will try to continue his dominant ways and get the Yankees off on the right foot in the second half of the season. Here are the notes and lineup from Peter Abraham. The Yankees won two of three earlier in the year in Detroit. Lucas French gets the start for the tigers, he is a 23 year old lefty who has appeared in four games with two starts. He has allowed 12 hits in 14 innings with 8 strikeouts. The Yankees are 5-15 against teams who currently lead their divisions. The Yankees are 16-5 against the AL Central this year. Robinson Cano is 18 of 50 this month. Johnny Damon is 5 of 30 this month with 5 runs scored. The Yankees are 12-11 in one run games, losing 7 of their last 10. They need to get better in these games like they were early in the year. Derek Jeter is 29 of his last 76 which is a 382 batting average. He raised his batting average from 301 to 321. Hideki Matsui is 12 of his last 31 with 4 homeruns and 12 rbi's and 6 runs scored. Phil Hughes is rolling as a reliever going 13 games, 18 2/3 innings, 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 5 walks and 19 strikeouts. Mo has allowed 1 run in his last 13 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts. He has walked 9 batters in his last 111 2/3 innings, that is just insane. He is the best ever. Robinson Cano has attempted 34 stolen bases in his career and been successful 16 times, he just shouldn't run unless it is a hit and run. A-rod is 22 of his last 29 with 8 homeruns, 22 rbi's and 17 runs scored. Yankees lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF)
