CC Sabathia earns first win of the season in Yankees 8-3 win over the Minnesota Twins

The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins by the score of 8-3 on Tuesday night. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and pitched well, earning his first victory of the season. The Yankees offense took out Twins starter Francisco Liriano early. Andruw Jones had a couple of hits, Brett Gardner, Chris Stewart, Nick Swisher and Eduardo Nunez each had two hits. 
Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs with a walk and seven strikeouts. Dave Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Cory Wade pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Liriano pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs with four walks and two strikeouts. Liriano is now 0-2 on the season, the Twins used three other pitchers. The relievers pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs and six hits.

Derek Jeter had a hit and two RBI, Swisher had two hits and drew a walk and Robinson Cano had a hit. Alex Rodriguez drew a walk, Jones had two hits and an RBI and Curtis Granderson had a hit and drew a walk. Nunez had two hits and an RBI, Gardner had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks and Stewart had two hits and three RBI. Swisher and Cano each had a double and Gardner had two doubles. Jones had a homerun. The Yankees were 6-17with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Gardner had a stolen base and Rodriguez committed an error.

Clete Thomas had a hit and an RBI for the Twins. Jamey Carroll had a hit and an RBI, Joe Mauer had a hit and Josh Willingham had a hit and an RBI. Alexi Casilla had a hit and Trevor Plouffe drew a walk. Thomas had a double and Willingham had a homerun. The Twins were 2-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

In the second inning the Twins took a 1-0 lead on a Willingham solo homerun. In the bottom of the inning Gardner hit an RBI double to tie the game at one. In the third the Twins took a 3-1 lead. Thomas had an RBI double and Carroll an RBI single. Nunez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third, Stewart had a two run single and Jeter had a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 Yankees. Jones had a solo homerun in the fourth to push the lead to 6-3. In the fifth Jeter had an RBI single making it 7-3 and the final run was scored in the seventh. Stewart had an RBI single to finish the scoring.

The teams have now split the first two games of the series. They will play game three of the four game series on Wednesday night. The Yankees are now 6-5 on the season and have won six out of eight since losing their first three games. The Twins record dropped to 3-8.
