New York Yankees pitching woes continue in loss to the Minnesota Twins

The New York Yankees lost to the Minnesota Twins by the score of 7-3 on Monday night. Freddy Garcia got the start and wasn’t very good. Carl Pavano got the start for the Twins and got off to a very rough start. He settled in though and was able to get the win. Derek Jeter continued his hot hitting, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira each had two hit’s a piece. Joe Mauer had three hits and Justin Mourneau had two hits for the Twins. 
Garcia pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up nine hits and five runs with no walks and five strikeouts. He suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the season. Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked two, Cory Wade pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout and Clay Rapada pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Pavano earned the win his first of the season pitching seven innings and giving up seven hits and three runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Brian Duensing pitched an inning giving up a hit and Matt Capps pitched an inning giving up a hit.

Jeter had two hits and an RBI, Granderson had two hits and an RBI and Rodriguez had two hits. Robinson Cano drew a walk, Teixeira had two hits and an RBI and Raul Ibanez had a hit. Jeter and Granderson each had a homerun. They were hit back-to-back in the first inning to start the game. The Yankees were off to a flying start but then completely got shutdown. The Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and they left six men on base.

Denard Span had a hit for the Twins. Jamey Carroll had two hits and an RBI, Mauer had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Josh Willingham had a hit and an RBI. Morneau had two hits and an RBI, Ryan Doumit had two hits and an RBI and Danny Valencia had a hit and an RBI. Clete Thomas had a hit and an RBI and Alexi Casilla had a hit and drew a walk. Mauer had two doubles, Valencia and Casilla each had one. Morneau had a homerun in the game. The Twins were 5-11 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Mauer had a stolen base and Carroll was caught stealing.

The game had a wild first inning with five combined runs and then slowed down. Willingham had an RBI single in the first to give the Twins a 1-0 lead. Doumit had an RBI single to make it 2-0 Twins. The Yankees tied it in the bottom of the first on back-to-back homeruns by Jeter and Granderson. The Yankees took a 3-2 lead when Teixeira hit an RBI single. In the fifth inning Carroll hit an RBI single to tie the game at three and then Mauer hit an RBI double to make it 4-3 Twins. Morneau hit a solo homerun in the sixth to give the Twins a 5-3 lead. In the eighth Valencia hit an RBI double and Thomas an RBI single. The final score was 7-3.

The two teams will play three more games in this series. They will play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The Yankees record fell to 5-5 and the Twins improved their record to 3-7 on the season. The Yankees after opening the season 0-3 have won five out of seven games. They always have their way with the Twins and would like to win the next three to win the series and have a very good opening homestand.
