The New York Yankees get whacked 17-5 by the Toronto Blue Jays

The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 17-5 on Thursday afternoon. The game took place at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin, Florida. The Yankees starting pitcher was Jose Ramirez who had been very impressive so far this spring, he had a very bad day. The Yankees pitchers were not good at all but they were all minor leaguers. Kevin Youkilis hit a homerun for the Yankees and Juan Rivera had another hit. 
Ramirez pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and six runs with four walks. He took the loss his first of the spring. Adam Warren pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four hits and eight runs with five walks and two strikeouts, Branden Pinder pitched 11/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs with two strikeouts and Preston Claiborne pitched two innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. Josh Spence pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out three and Graham Stoneburner pitched an inning striking out one.

Eduardo Nunez had a hit for the Yankees, Youkilis had two hits and an RBI and Travis Hafner had an RBI. Ben Francisco had a hit, Jayson Nix had a hit and an RBI and Gil Velazquez drew two walks. Zoilo Almonte had a hit, Corbin Joseph had a hit and an RBI and Jose Pirela had two hits and an RBI. Nunez, Nix, Pirela and Joseph each hit a double. Youkilis hit a triple and a homerun. The Yankees were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Joseph, Nix and Pirela each committed an error. Cervelli had a passed ball.

Josh Johnson picked up the win his third of the spring. He pitched three innings giving up two hits amd a run with five strikeouts, Esmil Rogers pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs with a couple of strikeouts and Brett Cecil pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up a hit, a walk and striking out three. Tommy Hottovy pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts, Mickey Storey pitched to one batter and struck him out and Alex Hinshaw pitched an inning striking out one.

Maicer Izturis had two hits, five RBI and drew a walk, Colby Rasmus drew three walks and Melky Cabrera had three hits and four RBI. Jose Bautista had two hits and two RBI, Adam Lind drew a walk and Mark DeRosa had three hits and two RBI. Ryan Langerhans had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks, Henry Blanco had an RBI and drew two walks and Mike McCoy had an RBI. Cabrera hit two doubles, Izturis, Bautista and Negrych each hit a double. DeRosa hit a homerun and the Blue Jays were 8-21 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. McCoy, Lind and Jimenez each committed an error.

The Yankees actually had a 1-0 lead in this game on a Youkilis solo homerun. The Blue Jays would score nine in the first though and six in the second to have a 15-1 lead. They scored one more in the third and the fourth, the Yankees added a couple in the fourth. It was 17-3 and the Yankees scored a run in the fifth and eighth to make it 17-5 and that was the final.

The Yankees four game winning streak was snapped. Their record is now 7-12 on the spring and the Blue Jays improved to 8-10. The Yankees will host the Miami Marlins on Friday afternoon and the Blue Jays will play at the Detroit Tigers on Friday afternoon.
