The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-1 on Friday night. The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and was great, Mariano Rivera bounced back from a blown save the other night to get the save. Mark Teixeira had a run scored and Kevin Youkilis an RBI single in their returns to the lineup.
Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up one run on six hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out ten to earn his fifth win of the season. David Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Rivera picked up his 19th save of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits and striking out one.
Brett Gardner had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Youkilis had a hit and an RBI and Robinson Cano drew a walk. Teixeira drew a walk, Vernon Wells had a hit and Jayson Nix had a hit and an RBI. Ichiro Suzuki had two hits and an RBI, Chris Stewart had a hit and drew a walk and Wells hit a double. The Yankees were 4-9 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Gardner was caught stealing.
Jon Lester pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs with four walks and five strikeouts. Lester took his second loss of the season. Andrew Miller pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and Clayton Mortensen pitched an inning striking out one.
Dustin Pedroia had three hits, David Ortiz had a hit and Mike Napoli had a hit and an RBI. David Ross had a hit, Jose Iglesias had two hits and Pedroi hit two doubles. Ross and Napoli each hit a double. The Red Sox were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Nava had an outfield assist.
In the second Nix hit an RBI single and Suzuki hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 Yankees. Youkilis hit an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 3-0 Yankees. In the seventh Napoli hit an RBI double to make it a 3-1 game. In the seventh Gardner hit an RBI single to make it 4-1 Yankees and that would be the final score.
The Yankees ended their five game losing streak and their record improved to 31-23. The Boston Red Sox record fell to 33-23. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday night.
