The New York Yankees win in walk off fashion


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 6-5 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Phil Hughes started for the Yankees and wasn’t very good, the bullpen was good. The Yankees offense came to life behind Derek Jeter, Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki.

Hughes pitched four innings giving up five runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out four. Preston Claiborne pitched two perfect innings with a strikeout, Boone Logan pitched a perfect inning and David Robertson gave up a hit in one inning with two strikeouts. Mariano Rivera earned his second win of the season, he pitched a perfect inning.

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Jeter had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Robinson Cano had a hit and drew a walk. Soriano had four hits and three RBI, Vernon Wells had an RBI and Suzuki had four hits and an RBI. Gardner hit a double; Jeter and Soriano each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

Matt Moore pitched five innings giving up eight hits and five runs. He walked none and struck out three. Alex Torres pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one, Joel Peralta pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and Jake McGee pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts. McGee took his third loss of the season.

Evan Longoria had two hits, James Loney had two hits and Wil Myers had two hits and four RBI. Matt Joyce had a hit and drew a walk, Kelly Johnson had two hits and an RBI and Yunel Escobar had a hit and drew a walk. Johnson hit a double and Myers hit two homeruns. The Rays were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

In the first Jeter hit a solo homerun, Wells hit a sacrifice fly and Suzuki had an RBI single to make it 3-0 Yankees. Johnson hit an RBI double in the second to make it a 3-1 game. In the third Myers hit a three run homerun to give the Rays a 4-3 lead. Soriano hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the third to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead. Myers hit his second homerun in the fifth to tie the game at five. The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth when Soriano hit an RBI single to win the game. The Yankees won 6-5 and avoided a three game sweep.

The Yankees record improved to 55-50 and the Rays record fell to 62-43. The Yankees will have the day off on Monday and begin a brief two game series in L.A. against the Dodgers, then will then head to San Diego to take on the Padres.
