The New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox behind strong pitching

The New  York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.  The game took place at

Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 4-1 Yankees.  Michael Pineda

started for the Yankees and pitched six great innings.  The Yankees bullpen was really good.  Derek

Jeter had a couple of hits and Dean Anna hit his first major league homerun. 

Pineda pitched six innings giving up one run on four hits.  He walked two and struck out seven. 
Pineda actually started the seventh inning but gave up a homerun and a single and then was taken
out of the game.  Cesar Cabral pitched 2/3 of an inning and struck out both batters that he faced
and David Phelps pitched 2 1/3 innings to pick up his first save.  He struck out three batters and
didn't give up a hit or a walk. 
Clay Buchholz took the loss, his first of the season.  He pitched six innings giving up seven hits and

four runs, two of them were earned.  He didn't walk a batter and struck out six.  Craig Breslow

pitched a perfect inning and Chris Capuano pitched a perfect inning. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Jeter had two hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI.  Carlos Beltran
had a hit, Brian McCann had a hit and an RBI and Anna had a hit and an RBI.  Jeter hit a double and
Anna hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left two men on
base.  David Ortiz had a hit, Mike Napoli drew a walk and Daniel Nava had a hit and an RBI.  Xander
Bogaerts had two hits, Jackie Bradley Jr. drew a walk and Ortiz hit a double.  Nava hit a homerun
and the Red Sox were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Bradley had a
stolen base and Herrera committed an error.  Sizemore had an outfield assist. 

In the fourth McCann hit an RBI single and Soriano grounded into a double play scoring another
run. 

The Yankees had a 2-0 lead.  The Yankees would add two more runs in the fifth.  Anna hit his first
major league homerun to push the lead to 3-0 and Ellsbury hit an RBI single to make it 4-0.  The Red
Sox would score their only run on a solo homerun by Nava in the seventh inning.  The final score
was 4-1 as the Yankees bullpen would close it out with three no hit innings.  The two teams will play
game two of their four game series on Friday night.  CC Sabathia will face Jon Lester in the pitching
matchup.
