The New York Yankees win a slugfest over the Cleveland Indians



The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 10-6.  Esmil Rogers started for the Yankees and pitched well, the bullpen was a little shaky.  Carlos Beltran led the offense with five RBI. 

Rogers pitched five innings giving up one run on four hits.  He walked one and struck out three and won his second game of the season.  David Huff pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and a run with two strikeouts, Shawn Kelley pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and four runs with two walks and Adam Warren pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.  Rich Hill retired the only two batters that he faced and Dellin Betances pitched an inning allowing two hits and striking out two. 

Trevor Bauer pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs.  He walked four and struck out three and took his seventh loss of the season.  Nick Hagadone pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with a strikeout, John Axford pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and four runs with three walks and Marc Rzepczynski pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and an unearned run.  Bryan Shaw pitched to one batter and retired him, Josh Tomlin pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and striking out one and Cody Allen pitched to two batters and retired them both. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Derek Jeter had a hit which tied him with Honus Wagner for sixth place on the all-time hits list.  Jacoby Ellsbury drew three walks, Beltran had two hits and five RBI and Brian McCann had a hit and drew a walk.  Francisco Cervelli had two hits, Chase Headley had an RBI and drew a walk and Stephen Drew had a hit and an RBI.  Martin Prado had a hit and an RBI, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and drew a walk and Gardner and Cervelli each hit a double.  Beltran hit a homerun and the Yankees were 4-14 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Suzuki had two stolen bases. 

Jeff Kipnis had two hits and drew a walk, Alex Aviles had a hit and Michael Brantley had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks.  Carlos Santana had three hits and three RBI, David Murphy had two hits and two RBI and Nick Swisher had a hit.  Jose Ramirez drew a walk, Roberto Perez had two hits and Kipnis, Brantley and Santana each hit a double.  The Indians were 4-13 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Kipnis and Ramirez each committed an error. 

In the first Santana hit an RBI single to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.  The Yankees came right back and scored five in the bottom of the first.  Beltran hit an RBI single, Headley had an RBI walk and Drew hit an RBI single.  Prado hit a two run single.  In the sixth Murphy hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2.  The Yankees scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-2 lead.  Beltran hit a grand slam and Drew had an RBI groundout.  The Indians scored four runs in the seventh to get back in the game but that was it for the scoring.  Brantley had an RBI walk, Santana hit a two run double and Murphy hit a sacrifice fly.  The final score was 10-6 Yankees.  The two teams will play game two of their three game set on Saturday afternoon.
