New York Mets win their opener as usual in Washington



The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals on Monday evening.  The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final score was 3-1.  Bartolo Colon started and pitched well and the bullpen was good also.  Lucas Duda led the offense with a couple of hits. 

Colon pitched six innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and eight strikeouts.  Colon earned his first win of the season.  Carlos Torres pitched a perfect inning, Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Jerry Blevins pitched 1/3 of an inning retiring the only batter that he faced.  Buddy Carlyle earned his first save of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and retiring both batters that he faced. 

Max Scherzer pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up four htis and three runs with none of them earned.  He walked two and struck out eight and took his first loss of the season.  Xavier Cedeno retired the only batter that he faced, Aaron Barrett pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Matt Thornton pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Curtis Granderson drew two walks, Duda had two hits and two RBI and Michael Cuddyer had a hit.  Travis d'Arnaud had two hits and an RBI, John Mayberry Jr. drew a walk and d'Arnaud hit a triple.  The Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Daniel Murphy committed an error. 

Michael Taylor had a hit, Bryce Harper had two hits and an RBI and Ryan Zimmerman drew a walk.  Harper hit a homerun and the Nationals were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Desmond committed two errors. 

In the fourth Harper hit a solo homerun to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth Duda hit a two run single to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.  In the seventh d'Arnaud hit an RBI triple to make it 3-1 Mets and that was the final score.  The Mets and Nationals will have the day off on Tuesday and then resume their series on Wednesday night.  Jacob deGrom will face Jordan Zimmerman.
