New York Yankees lose as close game gets away late



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada and the final score was 7-2.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and pitched pretty well.  Ivan Nova was not good out of the bullpen.  Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran and Ronald Torreyes each had two hits. 

Pineda started for the Yankees and pitched six innings giving up five hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked three and struck out six and took his first loss of the season.  Kirby Yates pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Nova pitched an inning giving up five hits and four runs. 

J.A. Happ pitched six innings giving up seven hits and a run with three walks and four strikeouts.  Happ earned his first win of the season.  Brett Cecil pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Drew Storen pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run and struck out one and Pat Venditte pitched a perfect inning.  Ellsbury had two hits, Aaron Hicks had an RBI and Mark Teixeira had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Beltran had two hits, Starlin Castro drew a walk and Chase Headley drew a walk.  Torreyes had two hits, Austin Romine had a hit and Torreyes hit a double and Teixeira hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Torreyes committed an error. 

Kevin Pillar had an RBI, Josh Donaldson had a hit and Jose Bautista had two hits and an RBI.  Edwin Encarnacion had a hit, Troy Tulowitzki had a hit and an RBI.  Michael Saunders had two hits and drew a walk, Russell Martin had an RBI and drew a walk and Justin Smoak drew a walk.  Ryan Goins had three hits and two RBI including two doubles and Saunders hit two doubles.  Donaldson and Bautista each hit a double.  The Jays were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Saunders was caught stealing. 

In the second Goins hit an RBI double giving the Jays a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth Hicks hit an RBI ground out to tie the game at one.  Pillar reached on a throwing error and a run scored to give the Jays a 2-1 lead still in the fifth.  Donaldson grounded into a double play and a run scored and it was 3-1 Toronto.  In the eighth Teixeira hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 3-2.  In the bottom of the eighth the Jays broke the game open.  Bautista hit an RBI double, Tulowitzki hit an RBI single, Martin hit a sac fly and Goins hit an RBI single and it was 7-2 Jays and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Thursday night.  Nathan Eovaldi will go up against Marcus Stroman.
