New York Yankees complete four game sweep of the Oakland Athletics



The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California and the final score was 5-4.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and he pitched pretty well.  Carlos Beltran and Didi Gregorius each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Pineda pitched six innings giving up six hits and three runs with a walk and six strikeouts.  Pineda won his second game of the season.  Dellin Betances pitched an inning with two strikeouts, Andrew Miller pitched an inning giving up an unearned run and he struck out one and Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and he picked up his sixth save of the season. 

Jesse Hahn started for the Athletics pitching 5 2/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs with no walks and three strikeouts.  He lost his second game of the season, John Axford pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and Sean Doolittle pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout.  Daniel Coulombe pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI, Brett Gardner had a hit and Carlos Beltran had two hits and an RBI.  Brian McCann had a hit and an RBI, Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI and Starlin Castro had a hit and an RBI.  Gregorius had two hits and Aaron Hicks had a hit.  Beltran hit a double, McCann and Ellsbury each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Ellsbury was caught stealing and Gregorius and Castro each committed an error. 

Coco Crisp had a hit, Billy Burns had two hits and Steven Vogt had a hit and three RBI.  Billy Butler had an RBI, Marcus Semien had a hit and Max Muncy drew a walk.  Jake Smolinski had a hit, Semien, Crisp and Vogt each hit a double.  The A's were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Burns had two stolen bases and Butler committed an error.  Coulombe had a pickoff. 

In the first Vogt hit an RBI groundout to give the A's a 1-0 lead.  In the second McCann hit a solo homerun to tie the game at one.  In the third Ellsbury hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.  Vogt hit a two run double in the fifth and it was 3-2 A's.  In the sixth Teixeira picked up an RBI single to tie the game at three, Castro hit an RBI single and it was 4-3 Yankees.  In the seventh Beltran hit an RBI double to make it 5-3 Yankees.  Oakland would score an unearned run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Butler and it was 5-4 which would be the final score. 

The Yankees swept the four game series and will have a day off on Monday.  They will begin a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
