New York Yankees blow lead and lose to the Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.  The game took place at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland and the final score was 6-5.  The Yankees had a 5-1 lead that they blew.  Luis Severino made his first start of the season and pitched pretty well, he really made one bad pitch and I don’t even know if it was really a bad pitch.  Gary Sanchez hit his first homerun and had his first multi-hit game of the season.  Brett Gardner had three hits to lead the offense.

Severino pitched five innings giving up six hits and four runs with a walk and six strikeouts.  Jonathan Holder pitched to two batters and struck one out, Tommy Layne pitched to one batter and retired him and Tyler Clippard took his first loss of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and two runs with one of them being earned.  He struck out one and Bryan Mitchell pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

Ubaldo Jimenez started for the Orioles and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs with a walk and five strikeouts.  Oliver Drake pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked one, Darren O’Day pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and two walks with a strikeout and Donnie Hart pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he won his first game of the season.  Brad Brach pitched a perfect inning striking out the side and Zach Britton pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and saved his second game of the season.

Gardner had three hits, Sanchez had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Matt Holliday had two hits, three RBI and drew two walks.  Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Starlin Castro had two hits and Aaron Judge drew a walk.  Gardner hit a double and Holliday and Sanchez each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Gardner had two stolen bases and Sanchez was caught stealing.  Headley committed two errors.

Seth Smith had two hits and two RBI, Adam Jones had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Manny Machado had a hit and three RBI.  Chris Davis had a hit, Jonathan Schoop had a hit and J.J. Hardy had a hit.  Smith hit a double and Machado and Smith each hit a homerun.  The Orioles were 3-5 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.

In the first Holliday hit an RBI single to give them a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first Jones hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  In the third Holliday hit a two-run homerun to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.  In the fifth Sanchez hit a two-run homerun to extend the Yankees lead to 5-1.  In the bottom of the fifth Machado hit a three-run homerun to cut the lead to 5-4.  In the seventh Smith hit a two-run homerun to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead and that would be the final score.

The Yankees have lost two straight and have fallen to 1-3 on the season.  They will take on the Orioles in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at 4:00PM.  They have their ace Masahiro Tanaka on the mound for his second start which needs to be much better than his first start.
