New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox in a marathon extra inning game


The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.  The game took place at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts and the final score was 4-1 in 16 innings.  Luis Severino started the game for the Yankees and he pitched great, the bullpen was equally great.  Chase Headley had two hits to lead the offense and Matt Holliday had the big homerun to tie the game in the ninth. 

Severino pitched seven innings giving up four hits and a run with two walks and six strikeouts.  Tyler Clippard pitched an inning giving up a hit, Dellin Betances pitched an inning with a strikeout and Chasen Shreve pitched giving up two hits without recording an out.  Adam Warren pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Jonathan Holder pitched three innings giving up a hit and he struck out one and Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning with a walk.  Ben Heller picked up his first win of the year pitching two scoreless innings and walking one with three strikeouts. 

Chris Sale pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up three hits and no runs with two walks and 13 strikeouts.  Craig Kimbrel blew his third save of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings and giving up a hit and a run with three strikeouts, Heath Hembree pitched an inning with two walks and a strikeout and Robby Scott pitched a perfect inning.  Blaine Boyer pitched an inning with a walk, Brandon Workman pitched an inning with a walk and a strikeout and Fernando Abad pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk.  Doug Fister lost his third game of the season pitching 2 2/3 innings and giving up four hits and three runs with two walks and a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew two walks, Gary Sanchez had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Aaron Judge drew two walks.  Holliday had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Starlin Castro had a hit and drew a walk and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and drew a walk.  Chase Headley had two hits, Didi Gregorius had a hit and an RBI and Austin Romine had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Castro, Sanchez and Ellsbury each hit a double and Holliday hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-14 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base.  Ellsbury had a stolen base and Judge was caught stealing. 

Mookie Betts drew a walk, Dustin Pedroia had a hit and drew a walk and Xander Bogaerts had a hit and drew a walk.  Mitch Moreland had an RBI, Hanley Ramirez had a hit and Andrew Benintendi had three hits.  Jackie Bradley Jr. had a hit, Tzu-Wei Lin had a hit and drew a walk and the Red Sox were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Ling was caught stealing and committed an error.  Bogaerts also committed an error. 

In the third inning Moreland hti a sac fly to give Boston a 1-0 lead.  In the ninth Holliday hit a solo homerun to tie the game at one.  IN the 16th inning Gregorius hit an RBI single, Romine hit an RBI single and Sanchez hit a sac fly to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will now play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and night.
