New York Mets get blown out by the Chicago Cubs


The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.  The game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois and the final score was 17-5.  Matt Harvey started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch very well.  Amed Rosario had three hits to lead the offense. 

Harvey pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs with four walks and two strikeouts and he lost his fifth game of the season.  Hansel Robles pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Chasen Bradford pitched an inning giving up three hits and four runs with three walks and a strikeout and Kevin McGowan pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts.  Jacob Rhame pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and five runs with two walks and a strikeout and Jamie Callahan pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and a strikeout. 

Jon Lester won his 11th game of the season pitching six innings and giving up six hits and two runs with four walks and five strikeouts.  Brian Duensing pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Pedro Strop pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a walk and a strikeout and Justin Grimm pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs with two strikeouts.  Felix Pena pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Jose Reyes had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Nori Aoki had a hit and Asdrubal Cabrera had a hit and drew a walk.  Kevin Plawecki drew three walks, Rosario had three hits and Travis Taijeron had two hits and drew a walk.  Harvey had an RBI, Dominic Smith had a hit and two RBI and Reyes and Smith each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Rosario had a stolen base and Taijeron was picked off.  Cabrera committed an error and Lagares had an outfield assist. 

Ben Zobrist had two hits and drew three walks, Kris Bryant had three hits and drew a walk and Anthony Rizzo had two RBI and drew four walks.  Willson Contreras had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk, Albert Almora Jr. had two hits and six RBI and Ian Happ had two RBI and drew a walk.  Jon Jay had an RBI, Jayson Heyward had a hit and drew a walk and Javier Baez had four hits and an RBI.  Rene Rivera had two hits and two RBI, Bryant hit a double and Rivera hit two doubles.  Almora Jr. hit a triple and Baez and Almora each hit a homerun.  The Cubs were 7-20 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.  Rivera had a passed ball and Contreras had a pickoff. 

In the first Reyes hit a solo homerun and the Mets had a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first Contreras hit an RBI ground out, Happ hit an RBI ground out and it was 2-1 Cubs.  In the second Harvey hit a sac bunt RBI to tie the game at two.  In the fourth Rizzo drew an RBI walk, Contreras hit a two-run single and the lead was 5-2 Cubs.  In the sixth Happ reached on an error and a run scored making it a 6-2 game.  In the seventh Baez hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 7-2.  Almora Jr. hit a three-run homerun and the lead was extended to 10-2.  In the eighth a passed ball made it a 10-3 game and a Smith two-run homerun cut the lead to 10-5.  In the bottom of the eighth Rivera hit a two-run double to make it 12-5 and Rizzo drew an RBI walk to push it to 13-5.  Almora Jr. hit a three-run triple and the lead was 16-5 and an RBI ground out by Jay made it 17-5 which would be the final score.  The two teams will finish their series on Thursday before the Mets head to Atlanta for the weekend.
