New York Mets defeat the Colorado Rockies to even up series


The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 5-3.  Steven Matz started for the Mets and he pitched well, the bullpen did a good job and Wilson Ramos, Todd Frazier and Carlos Gomez each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Matz won his fifth game of the season pitching six innings and giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out ten.  Seth Lugo pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts and Edwin Diaz picked up his 14th save of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and he struck out two. 

Jon Gray pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and four runs with three walks and eight strikeouts.  He lost his fifth game of the season.  Jake McGee pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and Carlos Estevez pitched 1 1/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout. 

Jeff McNeil had a hit, Pete Alonso had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Michael Conforto drew two walks.  Ramos had two hits, Frazier had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Gomez had two hits and two RBI.  J.D. Davis had a hit, Ramos and Davis each hit a double.  Alonso and Gomez each hit a homerun and the Mets were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Frazier committed an error. 

Charlie Blackmon had a hit and an RBI, Trevor Story had a hit and Nolan Arenado  had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Ian Desmond had a hit, Brendan Rodgers had a hit and Tony Wolters had two hits and drew a walk.  The Rockies were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Arenado and Desmond each had a stolen base. 

In the second Gomez hit a two-run homerun giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.  In the third Blackmon hit an RBI single and Arenado hit an RBI single to tie the game at two.  In the third Frazier hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.  In the fourth Wolters hit an RBI single to tie the game at three.  In the sixth Rosario hit into a double play but a run scored giving the Mets a 4-3 lead.  In the seventh Alonso hit a solo homerun to push the Mets lead to 5-3 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon.
