The New York Yankees were defeated
by the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon.
The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the
final score was 5-1. Clarke Schmidt
started for the Yankees and he was better but still not great. DJ LeMahieu led the offense with three
hits.
Schmidt pitched 5 2/3 innings
giving up three hits and three unearned runs with a walk and eight strikeouts. He took his second loss of the season,
Michael King pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout
and Ian Hamilton pitched two innings giving up a hit and a run with two walks
and two strikeouts.
Kevin Gausman started for the Blue
Jays and he pitched seven innings giving up three hits and no runs with no
walks and eleven strikeouts. Gausman won
his second game of the season. Erik
Swanson pitched an inning with a strikeout and Adam Cimber pitched an inning
giving up three hits and a run.
Anthony Rizzo had a hit and an RBI,
Gleyber Torres had a hit and LeMahieu had three hits. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had a hit, LeMahieu hit a
double and Rizzo hit a homerun. The
Yankees were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on
base. Kiner-Falefa had a stolen base and
Volpe committed an error.
Vlad Guerrero Jr. had a hit and two
RBI, Daulton Varsho had a hit and an RBI and Matt Chapman had two hits. Alejandro Kirk drew a walk, Whit Merrifield
had a hit and drew a walk and Danny Jansen had a hit and two RBI. Kevin Kiermaier drew a walk, Chapman,
Merrifield and Jansen each hit a double and Guerrero and Varsho each hit a
homerun. The Blue Jays were 1-8 with
runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
In the sixth Guerrero Jr. hit a
two-run homerun giving the Jays a 2-0 lead.
Varsho hit a solo homerun and it was 3-0 Jays. In the seventh Jansen hit an RBI double
extending the lead to 4-0. In the ninth
Jansen hit an RBI groundout pushing the lead to 5-0 and in the bottom of the
ninth Rizzo hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 5-1 but that would be the final
score.
The Yankees lost their first series
of the year dropping two out of three and will now head to Minnesota to begin a
three-game series on Monday night.
