New York Yankees blow big lead and lose a tough game in extra innings to the Tampa Bay Rays

 

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida and the final score was 8-7 in ten innings.  Gerrit Cole started for the Yankees and he did not pitch well.  The bullpen did a good job and the offense was led by Harrison Bader who had three hits. 

Cole pitched five innings giving up eight hits and six runs with five being earned.  He walked two and struck out six.  Jimmy Cordero pitched an inning giving up a run and a walk with a strikeout, Clay Holmes pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Wandy Peralta pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.  Michael King pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out three, Albert Abreu pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and an unearned run and he took his first loss of the season. 

Javy Guerra started for the Rays and he pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.  Josh Fleming pitched five innings giving up seven runs and six hits with four walks and a strikeout, Ryan Thompson pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts and Jason Adam pitched an inning giving up a hit.  Colin Poche pitched an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one, Garrett Cleavinger pitched to two batters and retired them both and Jalen Beeks pitched to one batter striking him out and he earned his first win of the season. 

Anthony Volpe drew a walk, Gleyber Torres had two hits and an RBI and Anthony Rizzo had a hit, an RBI and drew three walks.  DJ LeMahieu had two hits, Bader had three hits and two RBI and Oswaldo Cabrera had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Jose Trevino had an RBI and drew a walk, Aaron Hicks had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Hicks, Torres and Cabrera each hit a double.  Bader hit a triple and Rizzo and Bader each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-15 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Cabrera had a stolen base and Torres committed an error. 

Yandy Diaz had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Wander Franco had a hit and Randy Arozarena had two hits.  Harold Ramirez had two hits, Isaac Paredes had two hits and two RBI and Manuel Margot drew a walk.  Christian Bethancourt had a hit and three RBI and Jose Siri had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Ramirez hit a double and Paredes hit a double.  Siri and Bethancourt each hit a homerun and the Rays were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Franco had a stolen base. 

In the third Rizzo hit a solo homerun giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  Bader hit a two-run homerun and it was 3-0 Yankees.  In the top of the fourth Hicks hit an RBI double and Torres hit an RBI double to push the lead to 5-0.  In the top of the fifth Cabrera hit a sac fly extending the lead to 6-0.  In the bottom of the fifth Siri hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 6-1.  Franco hit an RBI single and it was 6-2.  In the bottom of the sixth Paredes hit an RBI double making it a 6-3 game and then Bethancourt hit a three-run homerun to tie the game at six.  Diaz hit an RBI groundout and the Rays had a 7-6 lead.  In the seventh Trevino hit an RBI groundout tying the game at seven.  In the bottom of the tenth Paredes hit a walk-off RBI single to give the Rays a 8-7 victory. 

The Rays took two out of three in the series and the Yankees will head home to face the Oakland Athletics for three beginning Monday night.
