New York Yankees slam their way to victory over the Oakland Athletics

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics on Monday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 7-2.  Nestor Cortes started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  The bullpen pitched well also and Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo led the team with two hits each. 

Cortes pitched five innings giving up six hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.  Ron Marinaccio won his second game of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits and he walked two and struck out one, Ian Hamilton pitched a perfect inning with a  couple of strikeouts and Nick Ramirez pitched two innings giving up two hits and he walked one and struck out one. 

J.P. Sears started for Oakland and he pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs with no walks and four strikeouts.  Sears lost his third game of the season, Austin Pruitt pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts and Sam Long pitched an inning with a walk and a strikeout. 

Torres had two hits and an RBI, Rizzo had two hits and drew a walk and DJ LeMahieu had a hit and two RBI.  Harrison Bader had a hit and drew a walk, Oswaldo Cabrera had a hit and two RBI and Jose Trevino had a hit.  Aaron Hicks had a hit and two RBI, Torres hit a double and Bader hit a triple.  Cabrera, Torres, LeMahieu and Hicks each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. 

Esteury Ruiz had two hits, Carlos Perez had a hit and drew a walk and Brent Rooker had a hit and drew two walks.  Jesus Aguilar had a hit and drew a walk, JJ Bleday had a hit and Jordan Diaz had a hit.  Tony Kemp had a hit and an RBI, Jace Peterson had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Nick Allen had a hit.  Ruiz hit a double and the Athletics were 2-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Ruiz had a stolen base. 

In the bottom of the fifth Cabrera hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the sixth Kemp hit an RBI single cutting the lead to 2-1.  Peterson had an RBI walk and the game was tied at two.  In the bottom of the sixth Torres hit a solo homerun giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead.  LeMahieu hit a two-run homerun and the lead was extended to 5-2.  In the bottom of the seventh Hicks hit a two-run homerun and the lead was pushed to 7-2 and that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night.
