The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies twice on Saturday. They beat them 2-1 and 6-3 in a doubleheader. R.A. Dickey pitched great in the first game and the bullpen used two pitchers to close it out. Dillon Gee pitched the second game and picked up the win, he gave up a bunch of hits but was able to now allow many runs. The bullpen pitched very well in the second game using three pitchers. The offense wasn’t great in the second game, they had some help by the Phillies defense to score some runs. In the first game the offense for the Mets only had six hits and no one had more then one.
In the first game Dickey pitched seven innings giving up three hits and one run with a walk and four strikeouts. Miguel Batista pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, he also struck out one and Bobby Parnell faced one batter and retired him to pick up his fourth win of the season. Manny Acosta pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout to pick up his third save of the season. In the night cap Gee pitched six innings giving up nine hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked two and struck out two. Gee is now 13-6 on the season, Parnell pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings and struck out one and Daniel Herrera pitched to one batter and retired him. Acosta picked up his fourth save of the season pitching one inning and giving up a hit and a walk.
The offense in the day game got hits from Jose Reyes, Ruben Tejada and David Wright. Wright had an RBI and a walk, Josh Satin had a hit and Nick Evans had a hit. Willie Harris had a walk and Valentino Pascucci had a hit and an RBI. Wright had a double and Pascucci had a homerun. The Mets were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and they left six men on base. Tejada, Reyes and Wright each had a stolen base. In the night cap Tejada had a hit and an RBI, Justin Turner had a walk and Harris had a hit. Wright had a walk, Evans had a hit and an RBI and Josh Thole had a hit and two RBI. Jason Pridie had two hits, Evans and Pridie each had a double. The Mets were 3-6 with runners in scoring position and they left three men on base. Harris and Pridie each had a stolen base. Turner had an error.
In the first game the Phillies got on the board first in the seventh inning on a Ryan Howard RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh Pascucci hit a solo homerun to tie the game at one. In the eighth Wright had an RBI double and that would complete the scoring in the game. In the night game the Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Wilson Valdez had an RBI single and Jimmy Rollins had an RBI single. In the third Ross Gload had an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0 Phillies. In the bottom of the third Harris reached on a fielding error and two runs scored to cut the lead to 3-2. Evans doubled to tie the score at three and Thole had a two run single to make it 5-3 Mets. In the fourth Tejada had an RBI single and it was 6-3 Mets. The game would end with that score.
The Mets have continued to play hard after Terry Collins really gave it to them about a week ago before their road trip. They have responded by playing well in Atlanta and St. Louis and now carrying it back home against the Phillies. The Phillies of course have nothing to play for but that isn’t the Mets fault. They need to feel good about themselves ending the season and heading into next season.

Mets lose on a walk-off as Parnell blows the save
The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals on Saturday night by a score of 8-7. Dillon Gee made the start and did not have a very good outing. The bullpen did a good job with three scoreless innings and getting the ball to Parnell but then he blew the save. Parnell is being groomed as the closer and it is a learning experience for him right now. The offense was good led by Angel Pagan and Justin Turner.
Gee pitched five innings giving up six runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six. Pedro Beato pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits, Daniel Herrera pitched to two batters and retired them both and Manny Acosta pitched two scoreless innings walking one and striking out five. Parnell pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with two walks, it was his third blown save of the season and his record is 3-5 on the season.
Jose Reyes had a hit, Turner had two hits and Lucas Duda had an RBI. David Wright had a hit and a walk, Pagan had two hits and two RBI and Jason Bay had a hit and two RBI. Nick Evans had a hit and two RBI, Ronny Paulino had a hit and Willie Harris had a walk. Wright had a double, Evans and Bay each had a homerun. The Mets were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and they left four men on base. Pagan had a stolen base and Paulino made a throwing error.
Ian Desmond hit a solo homerun in the first inning to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. In the second inning the Nationals took a 5-0 lead. Jesus Flores hit an RBI double and Tom Milone hit a three run homerun. In the fourth inning Pagan had a two run single to cut the lead to 5-2. Evans hit a two run homerun and the game was a one run game at 5-4 Nationals. In the fifth inning Roger Bernadina hit a solo homerun to give the Nationals a 6-4 lead. Bay hit a two run homerun in the sixth and the Mets had tied the game at six. In the seventh inning the Mets took a 7-6 lead on a Duda sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth inning the Nationals won the game on a walk-off two run single by Ryan Zimmerman.
The Mets have lost the first two games of the series in Washington. They will attempt to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Bay had been 0-35 on the road before his homerun. The previous record for a Mets position player was 0-32 by Cleon Jones. Al Leiter was 0-70 on the road but he was a pitcher. The Mets are now three games under 500. It is amazing some of the losses they have had this year but they continue to play hard and fight to the finish which is a good sign for them. The Mets have gone through a lot this year with the change in manager and GM, the owners financial mess and now the latest minority owner having his deal fall through. The Mets have played well for most of the year considering the circumstances. They have to continue to fight and set 500 as a goal for the season. If they can do that they should feel good about coming into spring training next year and making progress.

The Mets get clobbered in Philadelphia
Dillon Gee started and was horrible. Ryota Igarashi struggled and D.J. Carrasco pitched well out of the bullpen. Lucas Duda and Ruben Tejada each had a multi-hit game.
Gee pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and eight runs. He walked six and struck out three. Gee saw his record fall to 11-5 on the season. Igarashi pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout and Carrasco pitched two perfect innings striking out one.
David Wright had a hit, Jason Bay had a walk and Duda had two hits. Ronny Paulino had a walk, Tejada had two hits and Nick Evans had a walk. The Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base.

The Mets have started to fade away as they are seven games under 500 now. The Mets record is 60-67, they will play game two of three on Tuesday night against Philadelphia. They will finish their series on Wednesday afternoon. The Mets injuries have finally caught up to them as they aren’t good enough anymore to stay in the race. The Mets continue to fight and aren’t mailing it in but they just aren’t good enough. The Phillies who are the best team in baseball right now just manhandled them. The Mets would like to win a series like this for if nothing else to just have some confidence going into next year.

The Mets win the finale in San Diego
The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres by the score of 7-3 on Wednesday evening. Dillon Gee made the start and pitched well as he has for most of the season. The bullpen pitched very well except for Ryota Igarashi who gave up a couple of runs in mop up duty. Angel Pagan and Willie Harris set the table with good games and David Wright drove in a few runs.
Gee pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and one run, he walked four and struck out five. Tim Byrdak walked the only batter he faced, Manny Acosta struck out the only batter that he faced and Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless inning striking out one. Igarashi pitched one inning giving up two hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout.
Pagan had two hits and three RBI, Harris had two hits an RBI and a walk and Wright had a hit and three RBI. Lucas Duda had a hit, Jason Bay had a walk and Jason Pridie had a walk. The Mets blow a late lead and lose series to the Marlins
The New York Mets lost to the Florida Marlins by the score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. Dillon Gee started for the Mets and he pitched pretty well but he only gave them five innings. Bobby Parnell attempting to get a save was not able to do so. David Wright continued his successful return to the lineup with three hits. Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy each had two hits.
Gee pitched five innings giving up seven hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out three. Manny Acosta pitched two perfect innings striking out three and Parnell pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a strikeout. Parnell blew his first save attempt and suffered his second loss of the season.
Reyes had two hits, Justin Turner had a hit and Carlos Beltran had a hit and an RBI. Wright had three hits and two RBI, Murphy had two hits and Jason Pridie had a hit. Jason Bay had a hit and an RBI and Gee had a hit. Wright and Pridie each had a double and Wright had a homerun. The Mets were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base. Reyes and Murphy each made an error.
Carlos Beltran had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Hanley Ramirez grounded out driving in a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first. In the second inning Mike Stanton hit a solo homerun and Emilio Bonifacio had an RBI single to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead. Bay had an RBI single in the sixth to make it 3-2. In the seventh Wright hit a two run homerun to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. In the eighth inning Logan Morrison hit a solo homerun to tie the game at four and John Buck had a pinch hit RBI double which ended up being the game winning hit. The Marlins won the game 5-4, that hit gave them the lead and they held on.

They don’t want to drag it into next weekend so I would expect a deal by the middle of the week. The Mets record is 50-51 and although they have done a good job staying around 500 and fighting through all the injuries they aren’t realistic contenders. The Mets are in the middle of a tough stretch of 20 straight games without a day off. Pagan left the game with dehydration because of the heat. Gee was also affected by the heat laboring through his five innings. The Mets allowed five homerun over the last two games and that was what really hurt them. The Mets left 28 men on base over the three games including seven in this game. It wasn’t a good display of clutch hitting and another reason they lost two out of three. The Mets will now head to Cincinatti for three games.

Yankees News and Notes from Friday and Saturday
Eduardo Nunez won’t be the Yankees starting shortstop much longer, and he knows that. Best-case scenario is that he’ll be in the lineup two more days. If he’s playing much longer than that, something’s gone wrong with Derek Jeter’s rehab. Jeter got through a rehab today and felt good, he is slated for all nine innings tomorrow then should be active for the Cleveland game on Monday.
“I’m Eduardo Nunez, I’m not Derek Jeter,” Nunez said. “He’s a Hall of Famer. I’m this young guy. I have to learn a lot and do my best… I know he’s coming back, but I play hard, and one time my moment is coming to play every day. These two weeks have been an opportunity for me to show my manager, my staff and everybody that I can play (every day) one day in my career.”
Nunez made this team because of his bat, and after tonight’s 4-for-4, he’s hitting .309 as Jeter’s replacement. The eighth-inning insurance run he drove in gave the Yankees some breathing room on a night they seemed to hold their breath a lot. Nunez had three hits today and was robbed of another one by Justin Turner.
The obvious knock on Nunez is his defense. He has a strong arm and plenty of range, but he’s showing some of the inconsistency that you might expect, but not necessarily like, from a young player. He has had seven hits the past two days but Jeter is the shortstop for now. Girardi did say he will try and get Nunez more at-bats.
“He belongs here,” Mark Teixeira said. “He’s a guy that’s going to play in this game a long time, and he’s showing with this stretch here, these past couple of weeks, that he can play at this level.”
Said Joe Girardi: “When you have guys go down, a lot of times it’s kids who have a chance to step up. And he’s stepped up big time.”
Four scoreless innings from the bullpen, including key outs from Cory Wade and Boone Logan. “It makes it easier for us now that we have an idea exactly what we have,” Girardi said. “In the beginning when we were calling people up, you had to learn them as quick as possible and try to figure out which situations they’re most capable of being successful, but we’ve had them a little while and it definitely helps out to have that little background when you’re bringing them in.”
Nick Swisher has a season-best eight-game hitting streak coming into today's game. He’s hitting .379 during the streak.
Brian Cashman said before the game that it’s unlikely Jeter will play the full nine innings. He said this on Friday night. Jeter ended up playing five. He was 1-2 with a walk and made some nice plays in the field.
Cashman also said Rafael Soriano threw a 32-fastball bullpen and could be back the first series after the all-star break — that’s best-case scenario — but Eric Chavez had a mild setback with a strain in his back. He’s eligible to be back next week, but Cashman said that probably won’t happen
