New York Mets fall flat in matinee loss to the Chicago Cubs



The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Monday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 4-1 Cubs.  Carlos Torres pitched well in a spot start, the bullpen wasn't so good.  The Mets offense again only had four hits. 

Torres pitched five innings giving up three hits and no runs.  He walked two and struck out six.  Dana Eveland pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run and he struck out one, Buddy Carlyle took the loss his first of the season.  Carlyle pitched two innings giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts, Vic Black pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and striking out one and Jennry Mejia pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs. 

Kyle Kendricks pitched seven innings giving up three hits and a run.  He walked two and struck out three and earned his fifth win of the season.  Ramirez pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Hector Rondon earned his 18th save of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit and striking out two. 

Curtis Granderson had a hit, Daniel Murphy had a hit and Lucas Duda had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Matt den Dekker had a hit and drew a walk, Murphy hit a double and Duda hit a homerun.  The Mets were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  den Dekker was caught stealing and d'Arnaud had a passed ball. 

Arismendy Alcantara drew a walk, Javier Baez had a hit and two RBI and Anthony Rizzo had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Starlin Castro had a hit and drew a walk, Luis Valbuena had three hits and an RBI and Justin Ruggiano had a hit.  Castillo drew a walk, Ryan Sweeney had a hit and Rizzo hit a double and a homerun.  Baez also hit a homerun and the Cubs were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

Duda hit a solo homerun in the fourth to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  Valbuena hit an RBI single in the sixth to tie the game at one.  Rizzo hit a solo homerun in the eighth to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead and in the ninth Baez hit a two run homerun to make it 4-1 and that would be the final score.  The Mets split the four game series and now head to Oakland to take on the A's on Tuesday night.

The New York Mets fall in extra innings to the Philadelphia Phillies



The New York Mets were defeated on Friday night by the Philadelphia Phillies.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 3-2 in 11 innings.  Jennry Mejia started and pitched ok and the bullpen was pretty good.  David Wright, Wilmer Flores and Travis d'Arnaud each had a couple of hits. 

Mejia pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.  Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up no hits and no runs but walking three and striking out three, Jeurys Familia pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and Scott Rice pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk.  Kyle Farnsworth pitched an inning giving up a walk, Jose Valverde pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Carlos Torres lost his second game of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts. 

Roberto Hernandez started for the Phillies and pitched five innings giving up six hits and one run with three walks and four strikeouts.  Jake Diekman pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Mike Adams pitched an inning giving up a hit and had two strikeouts and Antonio Bastardo pitched two innings giving up a hit and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.  Mario Hollands picked up his first win pitching an inning and giving up a hit and striking out one and Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 10th save of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Juan Lagares had a hit, Daniel Murphy had a hit and two walks and Wright had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks.  Curtis Granderson had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Flores had two hits and d'Arnaud had two hits.  Eric Young Jr. had a hit, Granderson and Wright each hit a double and the Mets were 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left 15 men on base. 

Ben Revere had a hit and drew a walk, Jimmy Rollins drew two walks and Chase Utley had three hits.  Ryan Howard had a hit and drew a walk, Marlon Byrd had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks and Domonic Brown had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk.  Carlos Ruiz had a hit and drew two walks, Asche drew two walks and Utley hit two doubles.  Byrd hit a double and the Phillies were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left 17 men on base. 

In the first Granderson hit an RBI double giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.  Brown hit an RBI single in the third to tie the game at one.  In the fifth Brown hit an RBI single to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.  Wright hit an RBI double in the eighth to tie the game at two and in the 11th Byrd hit an RBI double to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead and that would be the final. 

The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday night.
