Yankees Day in Camp

Jesus Montero put on a show, he hit one ball on top of the scoreboard. He just has amazing raw power and Joe Girardi said that his offense is real mature. He also talked about how he has been improving behind the plate and they still view him as a catcher. This kid appears to be a amazing offensive machine and that is what is going to get him to the big leagues, they will figure out the rest. Montero said that he hasn't been trying to hit long homeruns, he said this " Today I found it a little bit, I tried to put a good swing on the ball and that is what happened." The other big story of the day was Posada catching A.J. Burnetts bullpen. Here is what A.J. had to say " It all went back to when I was right, if Jorge was going to catch me or not is irrelevant becasue when my mind is right then everything is a lot easier for Jorge." A.J. Burnett was blaming himself and then added everything went well today and he hopes he catches all his bullpens and starts all year. Here is what Joe Girardi had to say " I think sometimes when people talk about the relationship, they make the relationship bigger then it is, like it's what they do when they aren't in the game together." " To me it is just the understanding of the pitcher when he is on the mound that day and what you need to do. That's the relationship that you continue to learn." Here is some more of what A.J. had to say " I never questioned Jorge, never would and never did. I questioned myself and then everyone thought I questioned Jorge. Yanks win 7th in a row

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays tonight by the score of 10-5. Chad Gaudin got the start and after being staked to a 5-0 lead he did not do a good job, he should of been able to give the team at least 5 innings against a bad team but was only able to go 3 2/3 giving up 3 runs. Alfredo Aceves came in to get out of further trouble and then pitched a couple of more innings only giving up a solo homerun. Dave Robertson, Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte all pitched a scoreless inning, Marte and Robertson had a couple of strikeouts each. The Yankees offense continues to roll as they scored 10 runs for the second straight game and they have scored 8+ runs pretty regularly lately. Jorge Posada was the offensive star with 4 hits and a couple of rbi's. A-rod continued to be hot as he had a solo homerun and rbi single along with a walk. Hideki Matsui had a hit, rbi and walk and Mark Teixeira had a hit and a walk. Melky Cabrera had a couple of more hits to continue his hot hitting. The Yankees are on such a roll now you never think they are going to lose or are out of the game. The amazing thing about them is they jump out to a lead and when the other team gets close they come right back and pad the lead and close it out with their strong bullpen. If this team can get A.J. Burnett going they could be very very difficult to beat with CC and Andy Pettitte going strong and it looks like they will have Coke and Marte along with Phil Hughes and Robertson to get to MO. The Yankees will play game 2 tomorrow with Joba on the mound and the intrigue continues with that as we don't know how many innings he will pitch but I would suspect 4 since he pitched 3 the last time out.

Yanks lose opener in Oakland

There really isn't much to say about the Yankees lackluster performance last night in Oakland. They lost to Brett Tomko and the A's 3-0. Yes that is right that Brett Tomko who the Yankees DFA'D earlier in the year and who hadn't made a major league start in a year and a half. He pitched 5 shutout innings, the Yankees one big chance was in the 4th when they had the bases loaded and one out with A-rod up and he bounced into a rare 1-2-3 double play. The Yankees didn't do much else, the bullpen completely shut them down. A.J. Burnett pitched 8 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. He looked unhittable early on but had one bad inning where he gave up all the runs and 4 of the 6 hits but he deserved better then this. The Yankees will try and end a 2 game slide tonight with CC Sabathia on the mound in his hometown against Vin Mazzaro from New Jersey.

Big Tex comes up Big

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners last night 4-2. Andy Pettitte got the start and looked horrible early on giving up 2 runs in the first inning but with a runner on third and one out he got out of the inning with no further damage done. He went on to pitch 6 innings giving up only those 2 runs with 1 walk and 10 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless seventh inning making it 5 scoreless appearances in a row for him. Brian Bruney pitching well is huge for this team because it will give the Yankees another reliable late inning arm. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th putting a couple of guys on base but not giving up any runs. The top of the ninth is when Big Tex stepped to the plate and blasted one to break the tie. Mariano Rivera dispatched of the Mariners on 9 pitches in the 9th and the Yankees won their 4th game in a row. There was no one in the Yankees lineup that had more then one hit, Mark Teixeira has recieved a lot of talk lately about MVP and this was a reason why. He really is having a great season all around, he has one error in the field and after having a terrible April he is hitting on all cylinders now. Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jerry Hairston Jr., Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada all had a hit. The story of this game and the Yankees success since the All star break is the pitching which just keeps putting up good numbers. The Yankes are 22-6 since the break and the starters just continue to put the Yankees in position to win and the bullpen doesn't give up much. The Yankees will try and win their third in a row with Sergio Mitre taking the mound against Luke French.

Yankees/Oakland Pitching matchups

Tonight- Vin Mazzaro vs CC Sabathia Tomorrow- Brett Anderson vs Joba Chamberlain Saturday-Gio Gonzalez vs Andy Pettitte Sunday- Dallas Braden vs Sergio Mitre Tonight is the only game the Yankees will see a righty in this series, which is intersting. I would look for Eric Hinske to play right field tonight. The Yankees will try and keep it going with their ace on the mound and lets see if Joba can make it two in a row tomorrow.

Yanks sweep away another opponent

The New York Yankees won their 6th in a row today and completed their second consecutive sweep. A.J. Burnett got the win going 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Phil Hughes came on in the 8th and did his job giving up a single but erasing that on a double play. Brian Bruney came on in the ninth with a 6-2 lead but after striking out 2 guys he gave up solo homeruns to Adam Jones and Nick Markakis and Mo came in to get the last out and the save. Joe Girardi said after the game that it was the best stuff Brian Bruney has had in a while but he still gave up 2 runs and needs to get better. Mo said he isn't worried and that Bruney is fine. The offense came out firing with 4 runs in the first inning on a rbi single by A-rod, a rbi infield single by Robinson Cano and a 2 run single by Nick Swisher. Jorge Posada had a solo homerun later and the Yankees added another run in the 8th. A-rod had 2 hits and Posada had 2 hits and 2 rbi's. Robinson Cano also had 2 hits, Damon, Jeter, Tex, Swisher and Gardner all had a hit each. The Yankees are now 1 1/2 up on the Red Sox. If the Sox win tonight it will be a game and if they lose it will extend to 2 games. The Yankees open up a 4 game series with Oakland starting tomorrow night in a makeup game from April with CC Sabathia on the mound.

Spring Game 15: Yankees at Tigers

The big lefty is back on the mound today for the second time this spring. Mark Melancon will get a chance to continue to impress and maybe make the team out of camp. The battle of CF, Melky gets a chance today. I honestly think they will both be on the team and Melky will be on the bench but come in late in games and replace Johnny Damon. The battle in RF continues also with Swisher playing today. I think Nady will get enough playing time also but Swisher will be the starter in RF on opening day. Cano and Marte should be back by friday so that is good as they got eliminated in the WBC by the Dutch. Derek Jeter is the only main guy still playing in the WBC.
