The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 4-3 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Jeremy Hefner started and pitched pretty well for the Mets, the bullpen was good. John Buck had two hits and Kirk Nieuwenhuis had three RBI to lead the Mets offense.
Hefner pitched five innings giving up six hits and three runs with one of them being earned. He walked one and struck out five. Carlos Torres pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one, David Aardsma pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Bobby Parnell picked up his fifth win of the season. Parnell pitched a perfect inning.
Daniel Murphy drew a walk, David Wright had a hit and Marlon Byrd had a hit and an RBI. Lucas Duda had a hit and drew a walk, Buck had two hits and Nieuwenhuis had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk. Wright and Duda each hit a double; Byrd and Niewenhuis each hit a homerun. The Mets were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Wright and Murphy each committed an error.
Matt Garza pitched seven innings giving up three hits and no runs with a couple of walks and five strikeouts. James Russell pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Carlos Marmol blew a save and took his fourth loss of the season. Marmol pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and four runs with a walk.
Valbuena had two hits, Starlin Castro had two hits and Nate Schierholtz had a hit and drew a walk. Alfonso Soriano had a hit and an RBI, Darwin Barney had a hit and the Cubs were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Castro committed an error.
In the first Soriano hit an RBI single to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. In the fifth Soriano reached on a throwing error and two runs scored to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. The Mets rallied in the ninth and won the game 4-3. Byrd hit a solo homerun and Nieuwenhuis hit a walkoff three run homerun.
The Mets salvaged the final game of the three game series. The Mets record improved to 25-39 and the Cubs record fell to 28-39. The Mets will begin a four game series with the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. They will play a doubleheader on Tuesday with Matt Harvey pitching in the day game and Zach Wheeler making his major league debut in the night game.

The New York Yankees drop their fifth straight
The Anaheim Angels defeated the New York Yankees on Saturday night. The final score was 6-2 and the game took place at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. David Phelps started for the Yankees and didn’t pitch bad, the offense scored two runs in one inning and that was it.
Phelps pitched six innings giving up nine hits and four runs with a couple of walks and strikeouts. Shawn Kelley pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with three walks and Joba Chamberlain pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.
Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI, Jayson Nix had a hit and an RBI and Robinson Cano drew a walk. Ichiro Suzuki had two hits, Chris Stewart had a hit and Suzuki hit a double. Gardner hit a triple and the Yankees were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Nix and Stewart each had a stolen base and Suzuki had two. Suzuki was also caught stealing.
Tommy Hanson pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up five hits and two runs with a walk and eight strikeouts. Scott Downs struck out the only batter that he faced, Michael Kohn struck out the only batter that he faced and Kevin Jepsen pitched an inning striking out one. New York Yankees notes from the Bay area
The New York Yankees haven’t won in Oakland in quite a while; they were swept there these past three games. Last year they were swept in a four game series there. The Yankees pitching is still for the most part doing well but the offense is a different story. The offense is having a very hard time scoring runs; they have a lot of guys who are slumping. The early success of guys like Vernon Wells and Kevin Youkilis has faded away. They look like washed up veterans now. The question now is what do the Yankees do or what can they do??
The Yankees 4-7 hitters on Thursday afternoon/night were 0-28, which are one worse then a no-hitter. They had 12 strikeout with nine of them coming in extra innings. That is as bad as it gets, it sure felt like rock bottom. The Yankees could put David Adams back at third, Youkilis doesn’t appear to be a starter at this point and bench Vernon Wells as well but there are other guys too like Travis Hafner, Cano just started hitting, Teixeira isn’t hitting at all.
The Yankees did have some positive news yesterday believe it or not. Derek Jeter was cleared for full baseball activities. If there are no setbacks you can say he will be back in about six weeks, which is what spring training, is and what he will need to get ready. The Yankees used Adam Warren a lot yesterday and he did a great job. The bad thing about that is he will probably be demoted for it so the Yankees can have a fresh arm in the bullpen for the weekend.
Austin Romine will be playing on Friday night considering that Stewart caught all 18 innings and did take a pretty good pop in the 15th inning on the collision at home plate. Kuroda who everyone forgets about in this game was really good. He became the third Japanese born pitcher to log at least 1000 innings in his career. Girardi used Rivera because he said that Claiborne was throwing too many pitches and had thrown in the previous two games and he didn’t want to overuse him.
It looks like the Yankees will call up Thomas Neal from AAA Scranton and option down David Adams. Neal has been playing very well in AAA. He is hitting very well and this gives them another option for the outfield as Vernon Wells continues to struggle.

The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees on Thursday night. The game started in the afternoon and ended at night. The final score was 3-2 in 18 innings and took place at the Oakland Coliseum. Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and pitched well, the bullpen was good also.
