The New York Yankees lose a marathon game to the Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees on Thursday night. The game started in the afternoon and ended at night. The final score was 3-2 in 18 innings and took place at the Oakland Coliseum. Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and pitched well, the bullpen was good also. offense got their runs in the first inning and then did nothing for the final 17 innings.

Kuroda pitched eight innings giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. David Robertson pitched an inning giving up two hits and struck out three, Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Shawn Kelley struck out the only batter that he faced. Adam Warren pitched six innings giving up four hits and no runs with two walks and four strikeouts, Preston Claiborne took the loss his first of the season. He pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout and Mariano Rivera gave up two hits and intentionally walked a batter without recording an out.

Brett Gardner had two hits and drew two walks, Jayson Nix had a hit and Robinson Cano had three hits, two RBI and drew two walks. Mark Teixeira drew two walks, Kevin Youkilis drew a walk and Ichiro Suzuki had three hits. Chris Stewart had a hit, Gardner hit a double and Cano hit two doubles. Cano hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-13 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. Suzuki had a stolen base and Wells had an outfield assist.

Jarrod Parker pitched eight innings giving up five hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Grant Balfour pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Ryan Cook pitched an inning giving up a hit and struck out one and Jerry Blevins pitched an inning giving up a hit and walking one with two strikeouts. Pat Neshek pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Hideki Okajima pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Jesse Chavez pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up a hit and two walks with seven strikeouts. Chavez picked up the win his first of the season.

John Jaso had two hits and drew a walk, Seth Smith had three hits and an RBI and Jed Lowrie had a hit and drew two walks. Nate Freiman had a hit and an RBI, Brandon Moss had a hit and Josh Reddick had a hit and drew a walk. Chris Young drew a walk, Coco Crisp had two hits and Eric Sogard had a hit. Derek Norris had an RBI, Smith hit a double and the Athletics were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base. Young and Sogard each had a stolen base and Sogard was caught stealing. Blevins and Lowrie each committed an error.

Cano hit a two run homerun in the first to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the third Norris had an RBI groundout and Smith hit an RBI double to tie the game at two. In the 18th inning Freiman hit an RBI single to walkoff and win the game.

The Yankees record fell to 37-29 and the Athletics record improved to 41-27. The Yankees were swept in the three game series and will head to Anaheim to begin a three game series with the Angels on Friday night.
