The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 6-4 on Monday night. The game took place at Camden Yards on Baltimore, Maryland. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and wasn’t great but he battled. The Yankees bullpen was very good and the offense had four solo homeruns, Travis Hafner had the tying hits for the Yankees.
Sabathia pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up 11 hits and four runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Shawn Kelley struck out the sides in his one inning of work, he walked one batter, Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and David Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two.
Brett Gardner drew a walk, Robinson Cano had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks and Hafner had two hits and an RBI. Lyle Overbay had two hits and an RBI, David Adams had two hits and an RBI and Ichiro Suzuki had a hit. Vernon Wells had a hit and an RBI. Suzuki and Wells each hit a double and Cano, Adams, Overbay and Hafner each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.
Freddy Garcia pitched six innings giving up three hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Troy Patton pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, Darren O’Day pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Jim Johnson pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout. Pedro Strop continued his struggles against the Yankees pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk.
Nick Markakis had two hits and two RBI, J.J. Hardy had two hits and an RBI and Adam Jones had a hit. Chris Davis had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk. Matt Wieters had a hit, Danny Valencia had a hit and Steve Pearce had two hits. Chris Dickerson had a hit, Alexi Casilla had a hit, Wieters, Pearce and Markakis each hit a double and Hardy hit two doubles. Davis hit a homerun and the Orioles were 2-13 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base. Jones had a stolen base.
Cano hit a solo homerun in the first to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. In the second Adams hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second Davis hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1 Yankees. The Orioles tied the game in the fifth on a Markakis RBI single. Overbay hit a solo homerun in the seventh to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the Yankees. The Orioles tied the game and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Markakis hit an RBI double and Hardy hit an RBI double. In the ninth Hafner hit a solo homerun to tie the game at four. In the tenth Wells hit an RBI double to make it 5-4 and Hafner hit an RBI single to make it 6-4 which was the final score.
The Yankees record is now 19-0 this season when scoring first in the game. The Yankees overall record improved to 28-16 and the Orioles record fell to 23-21. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday night.
