The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 7-2 on Saturday afternoon. The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. David Phelps started and pitched well. Robinson Cano hit two, two run homerun to lead the offense.
Phelps pitched seven innings giving up six hits and a run. He walked three and struck out eight and picked up his second win of the season. David Robertson pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run and had a strikeout and Boone Logan pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI, Robinson Cano had two hits and four RBI and Vernon Wells had a hit. Travis Hafner had a hit and two RBI, Lyle Overbay had a hit and Jayson Nix had a hit. Austin Romine had a hit, Cano hit two homerun and Hafner hit a homerun. The Yankees were 1-2 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Phelps had a pickoff.
Brandon Morrow took the loss, his third of the season. He pitched five innings giving up seven hits and five runs with a strikeout. Brett Cecil pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Steve Delabar pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Darren Oliver pitched an inning giving up a hit and two runs with one of them being earned. He struck out two batters.
Melky Cabrera had a hit, Jose Bautista drew two walks and Edward Encarnacion had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. J.P. Arencibia had a hit, Adam Lind had two hits and Colby Rasmus had a hit and an RBI. Maizur Izturis had a hit, Emilio Bonifacio had a hit. Lind hit two doubles and Cabrera hit a double. Encarnacion hit a homerun and the Blue Jays were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Bautista was picked off and Izturis and Lind each committed an error.
In the third Gardner hit an RBI single and Cano hit a two run homerun to make it 3-0 Yankees. Rasmus hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. Cano hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1. Encarnacion cut the lead to 5-2 with a solo homerun in the eighth inning but Hafner hit a two run homerun in the eighth to make it a 7-2 game and that would be the final score.
The Yankees record improved to 27-16 and the Blue Jays record fell to 17-26. The two teams will play game three of three on Sunday afternoon. The Yankees will be looking for the sweep and are already 8-1 against the Blue Jays this season.
