The New York Mets win a close one over the St. Louis Cardinals



The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 3-2 Mets.  Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched well and the bullpen was good.  The Mets offense only managed four hits but they made them count. 

Niese pitched 6 2/3 giving up six hits and a run with two walks and three strikeouts.  Niese won his first game of the season, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 1/3 of an inning and struck out the only batter that he faced.  Carlos Torres pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits  and Scott Rice retired the only batter that he faced.  Kyle Farnsworth earned his second save of the season.  Farnsworth pitched an inning giving up three hits and a run with a strikeout. 

Michael Wacha lost his second game of the season pitching four innings and giving up three hits and two runs with five walks and ten strikeouts.  Maness pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, Randy Choate pitched 1/3 of an inning and walked a batter and Pat Neshek pitched an inning striking out one.  Fornataro pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Kirk Nieuwenhuis  had an RBI and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had a hit and drew a walk and Daniel Murphy had a hit.  Lucas Duda had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Travis d'Arnaud had a hit and drew a walk and Ruben Tejada had an RBI and drew a walk.  Niese drew a walk, Duda hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Nieuwenhuis had an outfield assist. 

Matt Carpenter had four hits, Descalso had a hit and an RBI and Matt Holliday drew a walk.  Allen Craig had a hit, Yadier Molina had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Shane Robinson had a hit.  John Jay had a hit, Molina hit two doubles and Carpenter and Daniel Descalso each hit a double.  The Cardinals were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  Peralta committed an error. 

Molina hit an RBI double in the first to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Tejada had an RBI walk and Nieuwenhuis had an RBI walk to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.  In the sixth Duda hit a solo homerun to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.  The Cardinals would score a run in the ninth but the game would end 3-2 Mets.  Descalso hit an RBI double.   The two teams will play the rubber game of their three game series on Thursday afternoon.
