New York Yankees skid hits five as they lose in Tampa Bay

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.  The game took place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida and the final score was 5-0.  Brandon McCarthy started and pitched pretty well.  The Yankees offense as usual couldn't get anything going.

McCarthy pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up four runs on seven hits but only two runs were earned.  He walked one and struck out seven and lost his 12th game of the season.  Esmil Rogers pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout.

Alex Cobb won his eighth game of the season pitching 7 1/3 innings giving up six hits and no runs.  He walked one and struck out eight.  Brad Boxberger pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and Joel Peralta pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Brett Gardner drew a walk, Derek Jeter had two hits and Mark Teixeira had two hits.  Chase Headley had a hit, Stephen Drew had a hit and Francisco Cervelli had a hit.  The Yankees were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Drew and Headley each committed an error.

Desmond Jennings had two hits, Ben Zobrist had a hit and an RBI and Matt Joyce drew a walk.  Evan Longoria had a hit and an RBI, Curt Casali had a hit and an RBI and Kevin Kiermaier had a hit.  Loney hit a homerun and the Rays were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Jennings had a stolen base.

The Rays scored two runs in the first and never looked back.  Longoria and Loney each grounded out scoring a run.  In the seventh Casali hit an RBI single, Zobrist grounded out to score another run and make it 4-0.  Loney hit a solo homerun in the eighth and that completed the scoring at 5-0 Rays.  The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday afternoon.
