The New York Yankees defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon.
The game took place at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida and the
final score was 7-2. Masahiro Tanaka
started for the Yankees and pitched ok, not great though in his two
innings. Luis Severino pitched great out
of the bullpen and Starlin Castro and Rob Refsnyder each hit a homerun.
Tanaka pitched two innings giving
up four hits and two runs with no walks and a strikeout. Johnny Barbato pitched an inning giving up a
hit and a walk with a strikeout, Severino pitched four innings giving up two
hits and no runs and he struck out five and Chasen Shreve pitched a perfect
inning with a strikeout. Tyler Olson
pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one.
Castro had a hit and an RBI, Pete
Kozma had a hit and Carlos Beltran drew a walk.
Cesar Puello had a hit, Brian McCann had a hit and Chase Headley had a
hit and an RBI. Dustin Ackley had two
hits, Refsnyder had a hit and three RBI and Ronald Torreyes had a hit. Chris Denorfia had a hit, Ben Gamel drew a
walk and Mark Payton drew a walk. Ackley
and McCann each hit a double and Castro and Refsnyder each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 0-9 with runners in scoring
position and left four men on base.
In the first Andrew McCutchen hit a
solo homerun giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
In the second Refsnyder hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at
one. In the bottom of the second John
Jaso hit an RBI single to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Refsnyder hit a two run homerun in the
fourth to give the Yankees a 3-2
lead. In the fifth Castro hit a solo homerun
to push the Yankees lead to 4-2. Headley
hit a sac fly making it 5-2 Yankees. In
the seventh Austin Romine reached on an error and a run scored giving the
Yankees a 6-2 lead. Jonathan Diaz
grounded into a double play and the score was 7-2 which would be the final
score.
The Yankees improved their spring
record to 6-8 with a couple of ties and they will take on the Baltimore Orioles
at home in Tampa on Friday night.
