New York Yankes fail to sweep the Minnesota Twins in Sunday loss



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the final score was 7-4.  Nathan Eovaldi started for the Yankees and he pitched just ok and the bullpen struggled.  Brian McCann had three hits and Brett Gardner had two hits to lead the offense. 

Eovaldi pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Eovaldi lost his fourth game of the season.  Delllin Betances pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run, Kirby Yates pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Nick Goody pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run. 

Ervin Santana won his second game of the season pitching 7 1/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked none and struck out four.  Taylor Rogers pitched to one batter and struck him out and Brandon Kintzler pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and he saved his second game of the season. 

Gardner had two hits, Alex Rodriguez had a hit and an RBI and McCann had three hits and two RBI.  Ike Davis had a hit, Gardner hit a double and McCann hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. 

Eduardo Nunez had two hits, Robbie Grossman drew a walk and Joe Mauer drew a walk.  Brian Dozier had two hits and an RBI, Trevor Plouffe had a hit and Eduardo Escobar had a hit and two RBI.  Max Kepler had three hits and two RBI, Kurt Suzuki had a hit and an RBI and Danny Santana had a hit and an RBI.  Suzuki and Kepler each hit a double.  Escobar hit a triple and Kepler hit a homerun.  The Twins were 4-9 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Kepler had a stolen base and Santana was caught stealing.  Rogers and Plouffe each committed an error. 

In the second McCann hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Rodriguez hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.  In the fifth Kepler hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the sixth Escobar hit a two run triple to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.  Kepler hit an RBI single to push the lead to 4-2.  Suzuki hit an RBI double and it was 5-2 still in the sixth.  In the seventh Dozier hit a solo homerun to give the Twins a 6-2 lead.  Gardner reached on a fielding error and a run scored in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-3.  In the bottom of the eighth Santana hit an RBI single to make it 7-3 and McCann hit a solo homerun in the ninth to cut it to 7-4 which would be the final score. 

The Yankee won three of four in the series and split the six games on the road trip at 3-3.  They will be off on Monday and return home for a three game series with the Colorado Rockies beginning on Tuesday night.
