New York Yankees defeat the Kansas City Royals


The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri and the final score was 7-1.  CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  Chris Carter had three hits and four Yankees had two hits to lead the offense. 

Sabathia pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and no runs.  He walked two and struck out four and won his third game of the season.  Tyler Clippard pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and he struck out one and Jonathan Holder pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout. 

Jason Hammel pitched six innings giving up nine hits and five runs with a walk.  Hammel lost his fifth game of the season.  Seth Maness pitched an inning giving up three hits and a run, Travis Wood pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect inning striking out the side. 

Brett Gardner drew a walk, Gary Sanchez had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk and Matt Holliday had an RBI.  Starlin Castro had two hits, Aaron Judge had two hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI.  Chase Headley had a hit, Didi Gregorius had two hits and drew a walk and Carter had three hits and two RBI.  Gregorius hit a double, Sanchez and Carter each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Headley and Judge each had a stolen base and Gardner had an outfield assist. 

Mike Moustakas had a hit, Eric Hosmer had a hit and Jorge Bonifacio had two hits.  Jorge Soler had a hit and drew two walks.  Alex Gordon had two hits and drew a walk, Whit Merrifield had a hit and an RBI.  Hosmer hit a double and the Royals were 2-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

In the third Sanchez hit a three-run homerun giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.  In the fourth Carter hit a two-run homerun to make it 5-0.  In the seventh Ellsbury hit an RBI single to push the lead to 6-0.  In the eighth Holliday hit an RBI groundout extending the lead to 7-0.  In the ninth Merrifield hit an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 7-1 and that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of three on Wednesday night. 

 The New York Mets were defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona and the final score was 5-4.  Tommy Milone started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch great, the bullpen pitched well.  The Mets offense managed only five hits and no player had more than a hit. 

Milone pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs.  He walked three and struck out four and took his first loss of the season.  Paul Sewald pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts, Fernando Salas pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Jerry Blevins pitched to one batter and struck him out. 

Zack Greinke pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.  Greinke won his fifth game of the season.  Andrew Chafin pitched to one batter and struck him out, Archie Bradley pitched one inning walking one and stricking out two and Fernando Rodney saved his 10th game of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Neil Walker had a hit and drew a walk, Wilmer Flores had a hit and Lucas Duda had a hit.  Rene Rivera had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Flores hit a double.  Granderson and R. Rivera each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. 

Gregor Blanco had a hit and two RBI, Nick Ahmed had a hit and Paul Goldschmidt drew a walk.  Chris Owings had two hits and an RBI, Yasmany Thomas had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Brandon Drury had a hit, Daniel Descalso drew a walk and Jeff Mathis had a hit and drew a walk.  Mathis and Drury each hit a double and Tomas hit a homerun.  The Diamondbacks were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Blanco, Goldschmidt and Owings each had a stolen base. 

In the second Granderson drew an RBI walk to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the third Blanco hit a two-run single to give Arizona a 2-1 lead.  Owings hit an RBI single and Goldschmidt stole home to make it 4-1 Arizona.  In the fifth Granderson hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 4-2.  Tomas hit a solo homerun in the sixth to push the lead to 5-2.  In the seventh R. Rivera hit a two-run homerun to make it 5-4 and that would be the final score.
