New York Mets are shutout by the Chicago Cubs


The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 2-0.  Steven Matz started for the Mets and he pitched well.  The Mets offense managed three hits. 

Matz lost his fourth game of the season pitching seven innings and giving up five hits and two runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Paul Sewald pitched two innings with a walk and two strikeouts. 

Jon Lester won his sixth game of the season pitching seven innings and giving up two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.  Randy Rosario pitched 2/3 of an inning with a walk, Steve Cishek pitched to one batter and struck him out and Brian Duensing pitched an inning giving up a hit and he recorded his first save of the season. 

Brandon Nimmo drew two walks, Jose Bautista drew a walk and Kevin Plawecki had a hit.  Michael Conforto had a hit and drew a walk, Amed Rosario had a hit and the Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Nimmo and Bautista each had a stolen base.  Matz had a pickoff. 

Albert Almora Jr. had a hit, Javier Baez had a hit and Wilson Contreras had a hit.  Ian Happ drew two walks, Kyle Schwarber had a hit and drew a walk and Addison Russell had a hit.  Ben Zobrist had an RBI, Russell hit a double and the Cubs were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Baez, Contreras and Schwarber each had a stolen base and Happ was caught stealing and picked off.  Russell committed an error. 

In the seventh Baez stole home to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead and Zobrist hit a sac fly to push the lead to 2-0 and that would hold up as it was the final score. 

The Mets were swept four straight by the Chicago Cubs and will be off on Monday before opening a two- game series with the Baltimore Orioles at home on Tuesday night.
