New York Yankees defeat Kansas City Royals and take the series


The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 6-3.  J.A. Happ made his Yankees debut and pitched well and Aaron Hicks led the offense with three hits. 

Happ pitched six innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.  Happ earned his 11th win of the season.  Chad Green pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout, David Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Aroldis Chapman earned his 28th save of the season pitching a perfect inning and striking out the side. 

Burch Smith pitched four innings giving up five hits and five runs with three walks and four strikeouts.  Smith lost his second game of the season.  Tim Hill pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Jason Adam pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and Brandon Maurer pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two.  Wily Peralta pitched an inning giving up a hit. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and drew a walk, Giancarlo Stanton had a hit and an RBI and Didi Gregorius drew a walk.  Hicks had three hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Gleyber Torres had an RBI and Greg Bird had a hit and an RBI.  Miguel Andujar had a hit and an RBI, Neil Walker had a hit and drew a walk and Austin Romine had a hit.  Hicks and Romine each hit a double and Hicks hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Hicks was caught stealing. 

Rosell Herrera had two hits and an RBI, Salvador Perez had two hits and an RBI and Hunter Dozier had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Alex Gordon had a hit, Gordon hit a double and Perez, Dozier and Herrera each hit a homerun.  The Royals were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Dozier committed an error. 

In the first Hicks hit a two-run homerun to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Andujar hit an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.  In the fifth Torres grounded out and a run scored to make it 4-0.  Bird hit an RBI single and lead increased to 5-0.  In the sixth Perez hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 5-1.  In the bottom of the sixth Stanton hit a sac fly to push the lead to 6-1.  In the seventh Dozier hit a solo homerun and in the eighth Herrera hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 6-3 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees won three out of four in the series and will take on the Baltimore Orioles for a brief two game set beginning on Monday night.
