The New York Yankees were defeated
by the Washington Nationals on Monday night.
The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final score
was 5-3. Stephen Tarpley started for the
Yankees and gave up his first runs of the spring. The Yankees offense only managed five
hits.
Tarpley pitched 1 1/3 innings
giving up two hits and two runs with a strikeout. Zack Britton pitched to two batters and got
them both out, Adam Ottavino pitched an inning with two strikeouts and Tommy
Khanle pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a walk
and a strikeout. Nestor Cortes Jr.
pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three
strikeouts and Joe Harvey pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out
one.
Brett Gardner had a hit, Mike Tauchman
had a hit and drew a walk and Aaron Judge drew a walk. Zack Zehner had a hit and drew a walk, Greg
Bird had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Francisco Diaz had an RBI. Troy Tulowitzki had a hit, an RBI and drew a
walk, Bird, Zehner and Gardner each hit a double and Tulowitzki hit a
homerun. The Yankees were 0-7 with
runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Wade had a stolen base.
In the first Anthony Rendon hit a
two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
In the third Tulowitzki hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1. In the fourth Kurt Suzuki hit a sac fly to
extend the Nationals lead to 3-1 and Brian Dozier hit an RBI single to make it
4-1. In the sixth Bird hit an RBI double
cutting the lead to 4-2. In the bottom
of the sixth Matt Adams hit a solo homerun making it a 5-2 game. In the eighth Diaz hit a sac fly cutting the
lead to 5-3 and that would be the final score.
The Yankees finished their spring
with a 17-10 record and will now have their season and home opener on Thursday
afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.
