The New York Yankees were defeated
by the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon.
The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the
final score was 4-2. Gerrit Cole started
for the Yankees and he pitched well. The
Yankees offense managed three hits as their losing streak hit five games.
Cole pitched 6 1/3 innings giving
up five hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked none and struck out ten. Cole took his first loss of the season. Chad Green pitched two innings with a walk
and a strikeout and Darren O’Day pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a
run with a strikeout.
Andrew Kittredge started for the
Rays and he pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with three strikeouts. Ryan Yarbrough won his first game of the
season pitching five innings and giving up two hits and a run with two walks
and four strikeouts, Diego Castillo pitched 1 1/3 innings with a walk and two
strikeouts and Jeffrey Springs pitched an inning with a strikeout and he saved
his first game of the season.
DJ LeMahieu had a hit and an RBI,
Giancarlo Stanton had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Gio Urshela had a
hit. Kyle Higashioka drew two walks,
Urshela hit a double and Stanton hit a homerun.
The Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men
on base. Hicks committed an error.
Yandy Diaz had a hit, an RBI and
drew a walk, Manuel Margot had an RBI and Joey Wendle had two hits and an
RBI. Yoshi Tsutsugo had a hit and an
RBI, Mike Zunino had a hit and Kevin Kiermaier had a hit. Tsutsugo hit a double and Wendle hit a
homerun. The Rays were 1-5 with runners
in scoring position and left three men on base.
Phillips was caught stealing.
In the bottom of the second Stanton
hit a solo homerun giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. In the third Diaz hit an RBI single to tie the
game at one. Margot hit a sac fly to
give the Rays a 2-1 lead. In the fifth
LeMahieu hit an RBI single tying the game at two. In the seventh Tsutsugo hit an RBI double to
give the Rays a 3-2 lead. In the ninth
Wendle hit a solo homerun to push the Rays lead to 4-2 and that would be the
final score. The Yankees were swept in
the three-game series and will have the day off on Monday. They will begin a two-game series at home
against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
