The New York Mets were defeated by
the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. The
game took place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri and the final score was
6-5. Joey Lucchesi started for the Mets
and he pitched poorly. Pete Alonso had
three hits and Kevin Pillar had two hits to lead the offense.
Lucchesi pitched 2 2/3 innings
giving up seven hits and six runs with a walk and a strikeout. Lucchesi took his second loss of the
season. Robert Gsellman pitched 2 1/3
innings with a strikeout, Sean Reid-Foley pitched two innings giving up two
hits and he struck out three and Jacob Barnes pitched an inning with a
walk.
Adam Wainwright won his first game
of the season. He started for the
Cardinals and pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs. He walked three and struck out five. Genesis Cabrera pitched an inning with two
walks and a strikeout, Ryan Helsley pitched to one batter and got him out and Giovanny
Gallegos pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Alex Reyes pitched an inning with two walks
and he earned his eighth save of the season.
Jeff McNeil had a hit, an RBI and
drew two walks, Francisco Lindor drew a walk and Michael Conforto drew a
walk. Alonso had three hits and drew a
walk, Dom Smith had an RBI and drew a walk and Pillar had two hits and two
RBI. Jonathan Villar drew a walk, Tomas
Nido had a hit and an RBI and Alonso hit two doubles. Pillar hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-8
with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
Tommy Edman had two hits, Dylan
Carlson had a hit and an RBI and Paul Goldschmidt had a hit and drew a
walk. Nolan Arenado had a hit, three RBI
and drew a walk, Paul DeJong had two hits and Tyler O’Neill had a hit and an
RBI. Harrison Bader had a hit and an
RBI, DeJong, O’Neill and Edman each hit a double and Edman hit a triple. Bader and Arenado each hit a homerun and the
Cardinals were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on
base.
In the bottom of the first Carlson
hit a sac fly to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
In the second Nido was hit by a pitch to tie the game at one. MeNeil drew an RBI walk and the Mets took a
2-1 lead. In the bottom of the second
Bader hit a solo homerun tying the game at two.
In the third Smith hit an RBI ground out to give the Mets back the lead
at 3-2. Pillar hit a two-run homerun
extending the Mets lead to 5-2. In the
bottom of the third Arenado hit a three-run homerun tying the game at five. O’Neill hit an RBI double and the Cardinals
grabbed a 6-5 lead which would be the final score.
