New York Yankees shutout the Tampa Bay Rays

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.  The game took place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida and the final score was 2-0.  Clarke Schmidt started for the Yankees, and he pitched well, and the bullpen also pitched well.  Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, Jose Trevino and Jon Berti each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Schmidt started and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and no runs.  He walked two and struck out six and earned his fourth win of the season.  Nick Burdi faced one batter and retired him; Luke Weaver pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Clay Holmes earned his 12th save of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and two walks but struck out the side. 

Taj Bradley started for the Rays, and he pitched six innings giving up four hits and a run with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Bradley took his first loss of the season.  Kevin Kelly pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one, Garrett Cleavinger pitched to one batter and struck him out and Jason Adam pitched a perfect inning.  Shawn Armstrong pitched an inning giving up three hits and a run. 

Anthony Volpe had a hit, Aaron Judge drew two walks and Stanton had two hits.  Rizzo had two hits and two RBI, Trevino had two hits and Berti had two hits.  Rizzo hit a homerun and the Yankees were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Berti had a stolen base and Schmidt had a pickoff. 

Yandy Diaz had two hits and drew a walk; Josh Lowe had a hit and drew a walk and Isaac Paredes drew a walk.  Austin Shenton had a pinch hit, Richie Palacios had a hit and Jose Caballero had a hit and drew a walk.  The Rays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Caballero and Palacios each had a stolen base.  Caballero and Paredes were caught stealing.  Arozarena was picked off and Lowe committed an error. 

In the fourth Rizzo hit an RBI single giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the ninth Rizzo hit a solo homerun extending the lead to 2-0 and that was the final score.  The two teams will meet on Saturday afternoon in game two of three.
