New York Yankees sweep the Detroit Tigers

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 5-2 in a rain shortened eight innings.  Nestor Cortes started for the Yankees, and he pitched well, the bullpen also pitched well, and the offense was led by Aaron Judge and Oswaldo Cabrera who each had two hits. 

Cortes pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs with a walk and nine strikeouts.  Ian Hamilton pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Victor Gonzalez pitched to one batter and got him out and Dennis Santana picked up his second save of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and he struck out two. 

Tarik Skubal started for the Tigers and he pitched six innings giving up six hits and two runs with 12 strikeouts.  Shelby Miller lost his fourth game of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and three runs with two walks and a strikeout and Andrew Chafin pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up tow hits and a walk.  Alex Lange pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Anthony Volpe drew a walk, Juan Soto had a hit and three RBI and Judge had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Giancarlo Stanton had a hit, Gleyber Torres had a hit and Jon Berti had a hit and drew a walk.  Jose Trevino had a hit, Cabrera had two hits and an RBI and Cabrera, Judge and Soto each hit a double.  Judge hit a homerun and the Yankees were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. 

Matt Vierling had a hit, Mark Canha had a hit and Riley Greene drew a walk.  Jake Rogers had a hit, Spencer Torkelson had two hits and an RBI and Colt Keith drew a walk.  Javier Baez had an RBI, Torkelson hit two doubles and the Tigers were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. 

In the bottom of the first Judge hit a solo homerun giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the second Cabrera hit an RBI double pushing the lead to 2-0.  In the top of the seventh Torkelson hit an RBI double cutting the lead to 2-1.  Baez hit into a force out to tie the game at two.  In the bottom of the seventh Soto hit a three-run double giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead and that would be the final score.  The Yankees swept the three-game series and will have a day off on Monday.  They begin a three-game series at home against the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
