The New York Yankees rally and then fall just short in Milwaukee



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the final score was 5-4 in 11 innings.  David Phelps started and didn't pitch that well.  John Ryan Murphy led the offense with three hits and Mark Teixeira and Yangervis Solarte each had two hits. 

Phelps pitched five innings giving up eight hits and four runs.  He walked three and struck out one.  Matt Thornton didn't record an out and gave up a hit and a run, Dellin Betances pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Adam Warren took his second loss of the season.  He pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. 

Matt Garza pitched five innings giving up six hits and three runs.  He walked four and struck out four.  Brandon Kintzler pitched an inning giving up a hit, Zach Duke pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run and Rob Wooten pitched to one batter and struck him out.  Will Smith pitched an inning giving up a hit and struck out one and Francisco Rodriguez pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run.  He was charged with his first blown save of the season but he picked up his first win of the season. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Derek Jeter had a hit and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and drew a walk.   Teixeira had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Kelly Johnson had a hit and two RBI, Solarte had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Ichiro Suzuki drew a walk.  Murphy had three hits, Gardner and Johnson each hit a double and the Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

Carlos Gomez had a hit and drew a walk, Logan Schafer had a hit and an RBI and Rickie Weeks had three hits and two RBI.  Lyle Overbay had a hit and an RBI, Mark Reynolds had two hits and an RBI and Khalil Davis drew a walk.  Jean Segura had a hit and drew a walk, Martin Maldonado had a hit and Garza had a hit.  Jonathan Lucroy had a hit and an RBI, Caleb Gindl drew a walk and Garza, Schafer and Weeks each hit a double.  The Brewers were 5-14 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Gomez and Segura each had a stolen base and Weeks was caught stealing. 

The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Johnson hit a two run double and Solarte hit a sacrifice fly.  In the third Weeks hit an RBI single and Overbay hit an RBI single to cut the Yankees lead to 3-2.  In the sixth Lucroy hit an RBI single, Schafer hit an RBI double and Weeks reached on a fielder's choice scoring a run to give the Brewers a 5-3 lead.  In the seventh Solarte hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4.  In the ninth Texeira hit a solo homerun to tie the game at five.  In the bottom of the ninth Reynolds hit a walk-off game winning single.  The Brewers won the game 6-5 and took the series two out of three.

The New York Yankees finish season with a 14 inning victory in Houston


The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 5-1 in 14 innings and the game took place at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. David Huff started and pitched well and the bullpen did a great job. Eduardo Nunez led the offense with three hits.

Huff pitched five innings giving up three hits and a run, didn’t walk anyone and struck out seven. Brett Marshall pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts, Dellin Betances pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings with four strikeouts and Preston Claiborne pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout. David Phelps pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out two, Matt Daley won his first game pitching two innings and striking out two and David Robertson pitched a perfect inning.

Nunez had three hits and two RBI, J.R. Murphy had a hit and an RBI and Curtis Granderson had two hits and an RBI. Mark Reynolds had a hit and an RBI, David Adams had a hit and Brendan Ryan had two hits. Zoilo Almonte had two hits, Granderson hit a double and Nunez hit two doubles. Adams hit a triple and Reynolds hit a homerun. The Yankees were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

Eric Bedard pitched seven innings giving up three hits and no runs with nine strikeouts. Josh Zeid pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, Kevin Chapman pitched to one batter and gave up a hit and Rhiner Cruz pitched to one batter and retired him. Josh Fields pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one, Lucas Harrell lost his 17th game of the season pitching 4 2/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs. He struck out four. Jorge De Leon pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit.

Jonathan Villar had a hit, Jose Altuve drew a walk and Matt Dominguez had a hit and an RBI. Chris Carter drew a walk, J.D. Martinez had a hit and Chris Corporan had a hit. Villar hit a double and the Astros were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Villar committed an error.

Dominguez hit an RBI single in the first to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. In the eighth Granderson hit an RBI single to tie the game at one. In the 14th Reynolds hit a solo homerun, Nunez hit a two run double and Murphy hit an RBI single. They scored four runs to take a 5-1 lead and that would be the final score. Murphy had his first career RBI. The Yankees finished with an 85-77 record and only missed the postseason for the second time in the last 20 years. The Astros finished 51-111 and on a 15 game losing streak. The Yankees finished with a three game winning streak.

The New York Yankees pound the Boston Red Sox


The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The final score was 10-3 and the game took place at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Andy Pettitte started and pitched well for the Yankees. Alfonso Soriano continued his hot hitting.

Pettitte pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with none of them being earned. He walked one and struck out five and won his eighth game of the season. Shawn Kelley struck out the only batter that he faced, David Robertson pitched an inning giving up two hits and Joba Chamberlain pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a walk. David Huff retired the only batter that he faced.

Brett Gardner had two hits, Eduardo Nunez had two hits and Robinson Cano had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Soriano had three hits and four RBI, Alex Rodriguez had two hits and drew a walk and Vernon Wells drew a walk. Curtis Granderson drew a walk, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and an RBI and Mark Reynolds had two hits and three RBI. Reynolds was making his Yankees debut. Chris Stewart had two hits and an RBI, Nunez hit a triple and Reynolds and Soriano each hit a homerun. The Yankees were 7-15 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Gardner, Soriano and Rodriguez each had a stolen base and Soriano was picked off. Nunez committed two errors, Soriano had an outfield assist and Pettitte had a pickoff.

Felix Doubront lost his sixth game of the season pitching four innings and giving up eight hits and seven runs with six earned. He walked two and struck out four. Rubby De La Rosa pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout, Franklin Morales pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and Drake Britton pitched an inning giving up five hits and three runs with three strikeouts.

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Dustin Pedroia had two hits and David Ortiz had a hit and an RBI. Johnny Gomes had a hit and an RBI, Stephen Drew had two hits and Mike Napoli had a hit and drew a walk. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a hit and an RBI, Will Middlebrooks had a hit and Holt drew a walk. Drew and Napoli each hit a double and the Red Sox were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Gomes was picked off, Drew, De La Rosa and Pedroia each committed an error and Morales had a pickoff.

In the first Soriano hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Reynolds hit a two run homerun in the second to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. Soriano hit a three run homerun in the third to make it a 6-0 game. Cano hit an RBI single in the fourth and it was 7-0 Yankees. Gomes hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-1 Yankees. Ortiz and Saltalamacchia each hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it a 7-3 game. In the ninth Ichiro hit an RBI single, Reynolds hit an RBI single and Stewart hit an RBI single to make it 10-3 and that was the final score.

The two teams will play game two of the three game series on Saturday afternoon.

The New York Yankees rally and then give it right back in loss to Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 10-6 on Thursday night. The game took place at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. David Phelps started for the Yankees and did not pitch well, he put them in an immediate hole. The Yankees offense had some good at bats but didn’t really come through until the eighth inning. Mark Reynolds, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters led the Orioles offense. Jason Hammel was pretty good starting for the Orioles, their bullpen gave up the lead. 
Phelps pitched four innings giving up six hits and five runs. He walked two and struck out three. Clay Rapada struck out the only batter that he faced, Joba Chamberlain pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Justin Thomas pitched a perfect inning. Dave Robertson took his sixth loss of the season not recording an out and giving up three hits and three runs, Boone Logan gave up a hit and a run and Derek Lowe pitched an inning striking out one. Hammel pitched five innings giving up six hits and a run with two walks and six strikeouts. Randy Wolf pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up a hit and three runs with two walks, Strop didn’t record an out and gave up two hits and two runs with two walks and Darren O’Day pitched 1/3 of an inning and retired the only batter he faced. Jim Johnson pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. O’Day picked up his seventh win of the season.

Derek Jeter had a hit, Nick Swisher drew two walks and Robinson Cano had two hits. Alex Rodriguez had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Eric Chavez drew a walk and Curtis Granderson had two hits and two RBI. Russell Martin had a hit an drew a walk, Chris Dickerson had an RBI and drew a walk and Suzuki had three hits and two RBI. Rodriguez hit a double, the Yankees were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Suzuki had a stolen base.

Nick Markakis had a hit, J.J. Hardy had a hit and drew a walk and Nate McClouth had a hit. Jones had two hits and two RBI, Wieters had two hits and three RBI and Reynolds had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk. Chris Davis had a hit and an RBI, Robert Andino had a hit and an RBI. Wieters, Andino, Jones and Davis each hit a homerun. Reynolds hit two homeruns and the Orioles were 2-2 with runners in scoring position and they left three men on base. Wieters had a passed ball.

In the first the Orioles took a 4-0 lead. Jones hit an RBI single and Wieters hit a three run homerun. The Yankees got a run in the fourth on a Granderson RBI single. Andino hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-1 Orioles. Reynolds hit a solo homerun in the sixth to make it a 6-1 game. In the eighth inning the Yankees scored five runs to tie the game at six. Rodriguez hit an RBI double, Granderson hit an RBI single, Dickerson had an RBI walk and Suzuki had a two run single to tie the game at six. The Orioles would come right back and score four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Orioles won the game 10-6. Jones hit a solo homerun, Reynolds hit a two run homerun and Davis hit a solo homerun.

The Yankees and Orioles are tied for first place in the AL East. The two teams will play three more games in this series. The Yankees and Orioles have an identical 77-60 record.

The New York Yankees drop the rubber game to the Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 8-3 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Phil Hughes started for the Yankees and pitched well for five innings and then lost it in the sixth. The Yankees bullpen wasn’t very good and their offense was led by Chris Dickerson. Chris Tillman started for the Orioles and left with tightness in his elbow, their bullpen pitched well. Mark Reynolds led the Orioles offense. 
Hughes pitched five+ innings giving up eighth hits and five runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Hughes lost his 12th game of the season, Cody Eppley pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and drew a walk and Clay Rapada struck out the only guy that he faced. Joba Chamberlain pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit, two runs and a walk and Justin Thomas struck out the only batter that he faced. Derek Lowe didn’t record an out and gave up a hit, a run and a walk. Boone Logan gave up a hit without recording an out and Cory Wade pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings. Tillman pitched three innings giving up two hits, two runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Randy Wolf won his fourth game of the season pitching 3 1/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout and Luis Ayala pitched an inning giving up a hit. Brian Matusz pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Darren O’Day pitched one inning giving up a walk.

Nick Markakis had three hits and two RBI, Nate McClouth had a hit and drew a walk and Adam Jones had a hit. Matt Wieters had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Reynolds had three hits and four RBI and Chris Davis had a hit and drew a walk and Manny Machado had two hits. Robert Andino had an RBI and drew a walk. Reynolds hit two homeruns and the Orioles were 4-10 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base.

In the second Dickerson hit a two run homerun to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Reynolds hit a solo homerun in the fifth to make it 2-1. Swisher hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-1. In the sixth Wieters hit an RBI single and Reynolds hit a three run homerun to make it 5-3 Orioles. In the eight the Orioles tacked on, Andino walked and a run scored and Markakis hit a two run single to make it 8-3 which was the final score.

The Yankees lost two out of three in the series. The Yankees record dropped to 76-57 and the Orioles record improved to 74-59. The Orioles are now only two games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East. The Yankees begin a ten game road trip on Monday afternoon in Tampa.

The New York Yankees get manhandled at home by the surging Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 6-1 on Friday night. The game took place in the Bronx, New York. Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and was ok, Derek Lowe wasn’t good out of the bullpen and the offense was lifeless. Miguel Gonzalez started for the Orioles and pitched great and the bullpen was ok. The offense was led by Mark Reynolds. 
Kuroda pitched 8 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and four runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four and lost his 10th game of the season. Clay Rapada pitched 1/3 of an inning retiring the only batter that he faced and Lowe pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up four hits and two runs. Gonzalez won his sixth game of the season pitching seven innings giving up four hits with no runs, a walk and he struck out nine. Darren O’Day pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Brian Matusz pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts.

Derek Jeter had a hit, Curtis Granderson had a hit and an RBI and Eric Chavez had a hit. Russell Martin had a hit, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and Jayson Nix drew a walk. Granderson hit a homerun and the Yankees were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base.

Nick Markakis had three hits and an RBI, J.J. Hardy had a hit and an RBI and Adam Jones had a hit. Matt Wieters had a hit, Chris Davis had a hit and an RBI and Reynolds had two hits and three RBI. Robert Andino had a hit and Manny Machado had two hits. Reynolds hit two homeruns and Hardy hit a homerun. The Orioles were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base.

In the second Davis hit a sacrifice fly and Reynolds hit a two run homerun to give the Orioles a 3-0 lead. Hardy hit a solo homerun in the sixth to make it a 4-0 game. In the ninth Reynolds hit a solo homerun and Markakis hit an RBI single to make it a 6-0 game. Granderson hit a solo homerun in the ninth for the final run of the game as the Orioles won 6-1.

The Yankees have now lost seven of their last ten and the Orioles are streaking. The AL East lead is down to two games for the Yankees over the Orioles. The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday afternoon. The two teams will also face each other next weekend in Baltimore as they will see a lot of each other. The Yankees record fell to 75-56 and the Orioles record improved to 73-58.
