The New York Mets win a close one over the Washington Nationals
The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals on Friday night. The final score was 3-2 and the game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. Dillon Gee started for the Mets and was good and the bullpen was good. Daniel Murphy and Travis d’Arnaud each had two hits to pace the offense.
Gee pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and three strikeouts. Gee won his 10th game of the season. Scott Rice retired the only batter that he faced and LaTroy Hawkins pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout for his sixth save of the season.
Eric Young Jr. drew a walk, Murphy had two hits and Andrew Brown had a hit and an RBI. Ike Davis had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Juan Lagares had a hit and d’Arnaud had two hits. d’Arnaud and Murphy each hit a double and Davis hit a homerun. The Mets were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Young had a stolen base.
Jordan Zimmerman lost his eighth game of the season pitching 7 2/3 innings. He gave up six hits and three runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Fernando Abad gave up a walk in 1/3 of an inning and Ryan Mattheus pitched an inning giving up a hit.
Denard Span had a hit, Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and Wilson Ramos had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Anthony Rendon had a hit, Steve Lombardozzi had a hit and an RBI and Ramos and Lombardozzi each hit a homerun. The Nationals were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. In the third Ramos hit a solo homerun to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. In the fourth Davis hit a two run homerun to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Brown hit an RBI single in the eighth to make it 3-1 Mets. The Nationals scored a run in the eighth on a solo homerun by Lombardozzi. The final score was 3-2 Mets.
The Mets record improved to 61-72 and the Nationals record fell to 68-66. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday night.

The New York Yankees win a slugfest with the Baltimore Orioles
The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night. The final score was 8-5 and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. CC Sabathia started and didn’t pitch very well. The bullpen did a great job for the Yankees; the offense saw Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki each hit two run homeruns.
Sabathia pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up five runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four and won his 12th game of the season. Shawn Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit, Boone Logan retired the only batter that he faced and David Robertson pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout. Mariano Rivera earned his 39th save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning.
Brett Gardner had a hit, Derek Jeter drew a walk and Robinson Cano had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk. Soriano had a hit and two RBI, Alex Rodriguez had a hit and an RBI and Curtis Granderson had two hits. Mark Reynolds had three hits and an RBI, Suzuki had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Austin Romine had a hit. Granderson and Romine each hit a double and Reynolds hit two doubles. The Yankees came back again in the bottom of the fifth with a Reynolds RBI double, Suzuki two run homerun and Cano two run single. It was 7-4 Yankees at this point and the teams would trade runs after that. The final score was 8-5 Yankees.

New York Yankees notes after a disappointing 2-4 road trip
The New York Yankees just completed a 2-4 road trip through Tampa Bay and Toronto. Here are some notes from Wednesday night; the Yankees were off on Thursday. The Yankees will begin a long homestand on Friday night against the Orioles followed by the White Sox and the Red Sox.
Hiroki Kuroda has been the Yankees ace really for the past two years now. He has become very hittable over his last couple of starts though. Joe Girardi said his command hasn’t been as sharp and he doesn’t know why. Kuroda is 38 years old and maybe it is catching up to him a little or maybe it is just a bad stretch that every baseball player goes through.
Eduardo Nunez tweaked his knee on Tuesday night and was scratched late on Wednesday. He will have an MRI on Thursday; he told Bryan Hoch he is worried he could miss two weeks or more. Mark Reynolds started at second and looked pretty good, he was a middle infielder in college and the minor leagues.
Alex Rodriguez tried to score from first in the fourth inning and was thrown out. Girardi said he didn’t have a problem with the decision but it did kind of halt the Yankees rally. Stewart had a passed ball in the first that led to two runs. He said he called a slider and a fastball was thrown but he tried to force the issue and should of just eaten the ball instead of throwing it wild and allowing the two runs to score. It was 4-0 instead of 2-0 and maybe the game would have been different without that play.
The Yankees have 29 games to play and a lot of teams in front of them. They really can’t afford to lose many more games. It looks like they will have to go somewhere around 20-9 to make it. I don’t think it is going to happen but it is possible. The Yankees will have to go 8-2 on this homestand to have any chance.

Carlos Torres started and pitched well and most of the bullpen did also. Eric Young Jr. had three hits and Daniel Murphy had four to lead the offense.
Torres pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up four hits and a run. He walked none and struck out six and won his third game of the season. Scott Rice struck out the only batter that he faced, Gonzalez Germen pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs and Pedro Feliciano retired the only batter that he faced. LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning striking out one.

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets on Wednesday night. The final score was 6-2 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Daisuke Matsuzaka started and was ok and the bullpen was pretty good. Justin Turner had two hits to lead the offense.
Matsuzaka pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs. He walked four and struck out five and took his second loss of the season. Robert Carson pitched 1 2/3 David Aardsma pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one, Scott Atchison giving up two hits and an unearned run with a strikeout and Pedro Feliciano pitched 2/3 of an inning.
