The New York Mets lose in Philadelphia as Cole Hamels shuts them down

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.  The game took place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the final score was 3-1.  Matt Harvey started for the Mets and wasn't bad but he didn't dominate.  The Mets offense only managed five hits off of Hamels. 

Harvey pitched six innings giving up six hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeout.  Harvey lost his first game of the season, Hansel Robles pitched a perfect inning, Sean Gilmartin pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and drawing a walk and Erik Goeddel pitched to one batter and struck him out. 

Cole Hamels pitched seven innings giving up four hits and a run with two walks and eight strikeouts.  Hamels won his second game of the season.  Ken Giles pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and he saved his sixth game of the season.   

Michael Cuddyer had a hit, Daniel Murphy had a hit and Wilmer Flores drew a walk.  Kevin Plawecki had a hit, Dilson Herrera had a hit and drew a walk and Anthony Recker had a hit.  Herrera hit a double and the Mets were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. 

Ben Revere had a hit and an RBI, Freddy Galvis had three hits and drew a walk and Ryan Howard had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk.  Carlos Ruiz had a hit, Howard hit a homerun and the Phillies were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Galvis had two stolen bases. 

Howard hit an RBI single in the first to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.  A wild pitch in the fourth tied the game at one.  Howard hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.  In the fifth Revere hit an RBI single to make it 3-1 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday night.  The series will conclude on Sunday. 

The New York mets win another extra inning game with the Philadelphia Phillies

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Citizens Bank Park and the final score was 4-3 in 11 innings.  Jon Niese started and pitched well and the bullpen held the lead.  Eric Campbell had a couple of hits to lead the offense. 

Niese pitched eight innings giving up eight hits and two runs.  He walked one and struck out six.  Scott Rice faced one batter and retired him, Vic Black retired both batters that he faced and Josh Edgin picked up his first win of the season.  Edgin pitched a perfect inning striking out the side and Jennry Mejia picked up his sixth save.  He pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run. 

Cole Hamels pitched seven innings giving up six hits and two runs with one of them earned.  He walked four and struck out eight, Cesar Jimenez pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one, Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning with a strikeout and Justin De Fratus pitched an inning with a strikeout.  Phillippe Aumont pitched an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Aumont lost his first game of the season. 

Juan Lagares had a hit, David Wright had a hit and drew a walk and Campbell had two hits.  Chris Young had a hit and an RBI, Curtis Granderson had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Ruben Tejada had a hit.  Travis d'Arnaud had three walks, Lucas Duda had a hit and two RBI.  Wright and Campbell each hit a double and Duda hit a homerun.  The Mets were 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Lagares had a stolen base and Tejada was caught stealing.  Young had an outfield assist. 

Ben Revere had a hit and drew a walk, Jimmy Rollins had a hit and Marlon Byrd had a hit and an RBI.  Carlos Ruiz had two hits, Ryan Howard had a hit and two RBI and Cesar Hernandez had a hit.  Hamels had a hit, Dominic Brown had a hit and Ruiz hit a double.  Howard and Byrd each hit a homerun and the Phillies were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Rollins and Reid Brignac each committed an error. 

In the fourth Young hit a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  Howard hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the fourth to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.  In the sixth Granderson hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two.  Duda hit a two run homerun in the 11th to give the Mets a 4-2 lead and in the bottom of the 11th Byrd hit a solo homerun to make it 4-3 and that was the final score.  The Mets have won three out of the first four and the final game of the series will be on Monday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets on Wednesday night. The final score was 6-2 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Daisuke Matsuzaka started and was ok and the bullpen was pretty good. Justin Turner had two hits to lead the offense.

Matsuzaka pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs. He walked four and struck out five and took his second loss of the season. Robert Carson pitched 1 2/3 David Aardsma pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one, Scott Atchison giving up two hits and an unearned run with a strikeout and Pedro Feliciano pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Eric Young Jr. had a hit, Juan Lagares had a hit and drew a walk and Andrew Brown had a hit and an RBI. Ike Davis had a hit and an RBI, Wilmer Flores had a hit and Turner had two hits. Matsuzaka had a hit, Daniel Murphy had a hit and Lagares, Turner and Brown each hit a double. The Mets were 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Young had two stolen bases and Murphy, Davis, Flores and Atchison each committed an error and Young had an outfield assist.

Cole Hamels won his sixth game of the season pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits. He gave up two runs and walked one with eight strikeouts, B.J. Rosenberg pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Jake Diekman pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

Jimmy Rollins had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Chase Utley had two hits and Carlos Ruiz had two hits and an RBI. Michael Young had two hits, Asche had a hit and drew a walk and John Mayberry had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Orr had a hit and drew a walk, Ruf had a hit and Hamels had a hit and two RBI. Frandsen had an RBI, Rollins and Young each hit a double and Ruiz hit a homerun. The Phillies were 4-18 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. Rollins had a stolen base and Bernadina an outfield assist.

Davis hit an RBI single in the third to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Rollins hit an RBI double to tie the game at one in the fourth. In the fifth Mayberry was hit by a pitch scoring a run and Hamels hit a two run single to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead. Ruiz hit a solo homerun in the sixth and Brown hit an RBI double in the seventh to make it a 5-2 game. The Phillies would add a run in the ninth and the final score was 6-2 Phillies.

The Mets record fell to 59-72 and the Phillies record improved to 61-72. The two teams will play game four of four on Thursday afternoon.

The New York Mets are swept at home by the Philadelphia Phillies

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5-1 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched well, the bullpen was just ok. The Mets offense only managed three hits. 
Niese pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and three runs with one of them being earned. He walked one and struck out three and took the loss his second of the season. Scott Atchison pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run, Brandon Lyon pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run and Scott Rice faced one batter and retired him. Bobby Parnell pitched a perfect inning.

Ruben Tejada had two hits and drew a walk, David Wright had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Lucas Duda drew a walk. Marlon Byrd drew a walk, Ike Davis drew a walk and Juan Lagares drew a walk. Tejada hit two doubles and the Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Niese, Wright and Buck each committed an error.

Cole Hamels earned his first win of the year pitching six innings and giving up two hits and a run with six walks and eight strikeouts. Antonio Bastardo pitched an inning giving up a hit, Mike Adams and Jonathan Papelbon both pitched a perfect inning.

The Phillies were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.

Wright hit an RBI single in the first to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Galvis hit a solo homerun in the fifth to tie the game at one. In the seventh Howard hit a two run double and Utley hit an RBI single to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead. Mayberry hit an RBI double in the eight to make it 5-1 Phillies and complete the scoring as that would be the final score.

The Phillies swept the three game series and improved their record to 12-14 and the Mets record dropped to 10-13. The Mets will head to Miami to take on the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

The New York Mets blow a lead in the ninth and lose 3-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3-2 on Wednesday night. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Matt Harvey started for the Mets and well in his last action of the year. The bullpen blew the save though for the Mets. The Mets offense was led by Ruben Tejada. Cole Hamels started for the Phillies and pitched well. Their bullpen pitched well also and the Phillies offense was led by Ryan Howard. 
Harvey pitched seven innings giving up a hit and a run with three walks and seven strikeouts. Bobby Parnell pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two, Josh Edgin blew his second save of the season and lost his second game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Jon Rauch pitched to one batter and struck out one. Hamels pitched six innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and ten strikeouts. Anthony Bastardo pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and two strikeouts, Justin De Fratus pitched to one batter and struck him out and Phillippe Aumont pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and striking out one. Jeremy Horst won his second game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Papelbon saved his 36^th save of the season.

Tejada had three hits, Daniel Murphy had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and David Wright had a hit and an RBI. Scott Hairston had two hits, Ike Davis had two hits and Lucas Duda drew a walk. Justin Turner drew a walk, Hairston hit a double and Wright hit a homerun. The Mets were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base. Tejada and Hairston each had a stolen base.

Rollins and Howard each hit a homerun. The Phillies were 0-1 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base. Rollins hit a solo homerun to lead off the game and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Murphy hit an RBI single in the third to tie the game at one. Wright hit a solo homerun in the sixth to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. In the ninth Howard hit a two run homerun to make it 3-2 and the Phillies held on to win the game 3-2.

The Mets are now 66-82 and the Phillies are 75-74. The Mets have lost two games to the Phillies and will try and avoid the sweep on Thursday night in the makeup of Tuesday nights game. The Phillies are trying to hang in on the wild card race and the Mets are finishing out the season.

The Mets lose 8-4 to the Phillies in a holiday matinee game

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 8-4 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing,New York. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched ok but not great. The Mets offense managed seven hits but not one batter had more then one. The bullpen used five pitchers and two of them had rough outings. Cole Hamels pitched pretty well for the Phillies. Ty Wigginton led the Phillies offense. 
Niese pitched five innings giving up two hits and four runs with five walks and seven strikeouts. Ramon Ramirez pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts, Bobby Parnell took the loss pitching an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout and Jon Rauch pitched an inning giving up a hit. Manny Acosta pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up four hits and three runs with a strikeout and Jack Egbert pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters. Hamels got his eighth win of the season pitching eight innings and giving up seven hits and four runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

Justin Turner had a hit, Kurt Nieuwenhuis had a hit and Daniel Murphy had a hit. Scott Hairston had a hit and two RBI, Lucas Duda drew a walk and Vinny Rottino had a hit and two RBI. Rob Johnson and Andres Torres had a hit. Torres had a double, Rottino and Hairston each hit a homerun. The Mets were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and they left two men on base. Murphy and Wright each committed an error.

Shane Victorino drew a walk, Wigginton had three hits, six RBI and drew two walks and John Mayberry had two hits and two RBI. Brian Schneider drew a walk and Hamels had a hit. Wigginton had a double and a homerun and Mayberry also hit a homerun. The Phillies were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and they left nine men on base. Pence had an outfield assist.

In the third Wigginton hit a two run double to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. In the fifth Rottino hit a two run homerun to tie the game at two. Mayberry hit a two run homerun in the sixth to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead. Hairston hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four. Wigginton hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 5-4 Phillies. Wigginton hit a three run homerun in the ninth to make it 8-4 and that would be the final score.

The Mets saw their record drop to 27-22. The Phillies improved their record to 26-24. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday night.

New York Mets unable to complete the sweep in Philadelphia as they lose 8-2

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 8-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Mets won two out of three in the series though. Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets and pitched a good six innings. The bullpen which has been so good was not on this day. Cole Hamels started for the Phillies and pitched a strong seven innings. David Wright, Ike Davis and Lucas Duda each had two hits to pace the Mets attack. The Phillies offense had been struggling to score runs but broke out of it on Sunday afternoon.

Pelfrey pitched six innings giving up eight hits and one run. He walked two and struck out two. Ramon Ramirez got charged with a blown save and the loss. He pitched an inning and gave up three hits and two runs, Manny Acosta pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and four unearned runs. He walked two and struck out one, Miguel Batista pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and one run. Hamels for the Phillies pitched seven innings giving up six hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out 10. Chad Qualls and Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a scoreless inning. Papelbon gave up a couple of hits and a walk but struck out two.

Daniel Murphy had a hit, Wright had two hits and Davis had two hits and two RBI. Scott Hairston had a hit, Duda had two hits and Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a hit. Mike Nickeas and Josh Thole each drew a walk. Davis hit a homerun and the Mets were 0-2 with runners in scoring position. The Mets left seven men on base, Wright was caught stealing and Tejada made an error.

Juan Pierre had three hits to lead the Phillies attack. Hunter Pence and Jimmy Rollins each had a couple of hits. They each had an RBI and drew a walk also. Ty Wigginton had a hit and four RBI, Lance Nix had a hit and an RBI and John Mayberry Jr. had a hit and an RBI. Carlos Ruiz, Orr and Hamels each had a hit. Nix, Orr and Wigginton each had a double. The Phillies were 4-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Rollins and Pence each had a stolen base and Pierre was caught stealing.

The Mets struck first with a Davis two run homerun in the first. The Phillies got one back in the bottom of the first. In the seventh the Phillies took a 3-2 lead with two runs and then broke it open in the eighth with five runs. The big hit of the eighth was a three run double by Wigginton.

The Mets are 6-3 and the Phillies are 4-5. The Mets head to Atlanta to begin a three game series. They will play Monday and Tuesday nights and then on Wednesday afternoon.

Yankees at Phillies-World Series Game 3

The Yankees will try and take the lead in the series 2 games to 1. The game starts at 7:57 on FOX. Andy Pettitte is on the mound against Cole Hamels who was the MVP of last years World Series but this postseason has been horrible pitching to a near 7 era. Here are the notes and lineups via Sam Borden and Chad Jennings of the Journal News. The Yankees are 3 wins away from their 27th World Title and first in 9 years. People often talk about Game 3 as the swing game in a World Series and there’s some truth to it: The team winning Game 3 has gone on to win in 35 of 53 World Series that were tied at 1, including each of the last two and nine of the last 10. The lone exception? You probably already know it. The Yankees won Game 3 of the 2003 World Series but then lost three straight to the Marlins to lose the Series. I really like Andy Pettitte in this spot and the Yankees really have a pitching advantage tomorrow so to me this is a big big game. The approximately 108 miles from Yankee Stadium to Citizens Bank Park is among the shortest distances between World Series sites. It is so close in distance the teams have been taking trains to travel from one city to the other. Tonight is Andy Pettitte’s 11th World Series start for the Yankees, which is the second-most in team history. In case you were wondering, the World Series record for strikeouts is 12, set by the Royals Willie Wilson back in 1980 against – yes – the Phillies. The Yankees would like to see him get going but he is a huge reason they are here to begin with. It will be intersting in this park as the ball really flys. More evidence why Derek Jeter should always be hitting, instead of bunting: After going 4-for-8 in the first two games, Jeter’s career World Series average is .314 (43-for-137) which is fifth-highest all-time among players with at least 100 ABs. Who’s ahead of him? Only Lou Gehrig, Eddie Collins, Babe Ruth and Steve Garvey. He will pick his spots to who to use, Hinske and Matsui will be the main guys I would think. He also announced CC Sabathia will pitch tomorrow on 3 days rest and that Burnett and Pettitte probably would also though he will wait tomorrow to announce the rotation further. He said he would like to save Gaudin until later on in the series out of the bullpen but if he has to be used tonight or tomorrow as a long man he could.
