The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins by the score of 7-3 on Saturday afternoon. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Jon Niese started and pitched well and the bullpen pitched pretty well for the Mets. David Wright and Ike Davis led the Mets offense with five of their nine hits.
Niese pitched six innings giving up eight hits and two runs with one of them being earned. He walked two and struck out five. Scott Atchison pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run, Josh Edgin pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Brandon Lyon picked up the win pitching an inning and giving up a hit and striking out two. Bobby Parnell pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Mike Baxter had a hit and drew two walks, Daniel Murphy had a hit and an RBI and Wright had three hits and an RBI. Davis had two hits and drew a walk, John Buck had a hit and four RBI and Lucas Duda drew two walks. Colin Cowgill had a hit and an RBI, Buck hit a double, Murphy hit a triple and Cowgill hit a homerun. The Mets were 4-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Baxter and Wright had a stolen base. Tejada committed an error.
Ricky Nolasco pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Webb took the loss pitching 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked two batters, Chad Qualls pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout.
Juan Pierre had two hits and drew a walk, Placido Polanco had a hit and Mike Stanton had two hits. Gregg Dobbs had two hits and two RBI, Miguel Olivo had two hits and Hechavarria had a hit and drew a walk. Solano had a hit and the Marlins were 2-8 with runners in scoring position with eight men left on base. Olivo had two errors in the game.
Dobbs hit an RBI single in the first to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Buck hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one. In the fifth Dobbs grounded out an a run scored to give the Marlins the 2-1 lead. Buck hit a two run double in the sixth inning to make it 3-2 Mets. Dobbs hit an RBI single in the seventh to tie the game at three. In the seventh inning Murphy hit an RBI triple, Wright hit an RBI single and Buck hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 Mets. In the eighth Cowgill hit a solo homerun making it 7-3 Mets and that was the final score.
The Mets improved to 3-2 on the season and the Marlins record dropped to 1-4. The two teams will play the rubber game of their three game series on Sunday afternoon.
