The Miami Marlins 2-1 defeated the New York Mets on Saturday night. The game was played at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. The game lasted 20 innings and over six hours. Matt Harvey started and pitched well but left the game with an injured back, it doesn’t appear to be serious. Shawn Marcum took the loss pitching well in relief; he pitched eight innings out of the bullpen. David Wright led the offense with three hits.
Harvey pitched seven innings giving up six hits and a run and struck out six. Brandon Lyon pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Bobby Parnell pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and LaTroy Hawkins pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and drew a walk. Scott Rice pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Greg Burke pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one.
Omar Quintanilla had a hit and drew a walk, Daniel Murphy had a hit and drew a walk and Wright had three hits and drew a walk. Lucas Duda had a hit and drew two walks, Marlon Byrd drew two walks and Ike Davis drew a walk. Justin Turner had two hits and drew a walk, John Buck had two hits and Juan Lagares had two hits and an RBI. Harvey had a hit, Lagares and Turner each hit a double and the Mets set a franchise record going 0-19 with runners in scoring position. They left 22 men on base, Wright had a stolen base and Lagares had an outfield assist. Harvey and Buck each had a pickoff.
Jose Fernandez pitched six innings giving up three hits and a run with three walks and seven strikeouts. Chad Qualls pitched an inning giving up a hit, Mike Dunn pitched 2/3 of an inning walking two and striking out one and Ryan Webb pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit. Dan Jennings pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up three walks and striking out two, A.J. Ramos pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up a walk and Kevin Slowey took the loss his fifth of the season. Slowey pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and striking out eight and Pat Cishek saved his sixth game of the season pitching an inning and striking out one.
Juan Pierre had a hit, Lucas had a hit and Dietrich had a hit. Ozuna had three hits, Coghlan had an RBI and Placido Polanco had a hit. Rob Brantley had four hits, Hechavarria had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Gregg Dobbs drew a walk. The Marlins were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Hechavarria had a stolen base and Ozuna was caught stealing. Ozuna had an outfield assist.
In the second Lagares hit an RBI double giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. That was the only run the Mets would score. In the fourth Coghlan hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one. In the 20th inning Hechavarria hit an RBI single to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead which would be the final score.
The Mets record fell to 23-34 and the Marlins record improved to 17-44. The two teams will complete their series on Sunday afternoon.
