The New York Yankees late rally falls short in Oakland

The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. The final score was 6-4 and the game took place at Oakland Coliseum. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and did not pitch well. Mark Teixeira led the Yankees offense with three RBI but their offense didn’t do anything until the last couple of innings.

Sabathia pitched six innings giving up eight hits and six runs. He walked one and struck out three and took his fifth loss of the season. Preston Claiborne pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Joba Chamberlain pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two.

Brett Gardner had two hits, Robinson Cano had two hits and drew two walks and Teixeira had two hits and three RBI. Travis Hafner drew two walks, Kevin Youkilis had a hit and Vernon Wells had a hit and an RBI. Chris Stewart had two hits, Cano hit a double and the Yankees were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

Bartolo Colon pitched six innings giving up three hits and no runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Colon won his eighth game of the season. Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Jerry Blevins pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up four hits and two runs and Ryan Cook pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a strikeout. Grant Balfour pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit.

Coco Crisp had a hit and an RBI, Brett Lawrie had a hit and Josh Donaldson had a hit. Freiman had three hits, Chris Young had a hit and drew a walk and Derrick Norris had two hits and four RBI. Norris and Donaldson each hit a double; Crisp and Norris each hit a homerun. The Athletics were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.

In the bottom of the first Crisp hit a solo homerun to give the Athletics a 1-0 lead. In the second Norris hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0. Norris hit a three run homerun in the fourth to make it a 5-0 A’s lead. In the sixth Young had an RBI walk to make it a 6-0 game. In the eighth Teixeira hit an RBI single and Wells hit an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game. In the ninth Teixeira hit a two run single to make it 6-4 and the game ended with Hafner hitting a deep drive to the wall.

The Yankees record dropped to 37-27 and the Athletics record improved to 39-27. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Wednesday night.
