The New York Yankees defeated the
Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon.
The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the
final score was 7-1. Brandon McCarthy
started for the Yankees and pitched very well.
Carlos Beltran, Brian Roberts and Kelly Johnson each had two hits to
lead the offense.
McCarthy pitched six innings giving
up six hits and a run. He walked none
and struck out nine to earn his fourth win of the season. Adam Warren pitched a perfect inning with a
strikeout, Shawn Kelley pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and three
strikeouts and Matt Thornton retired both batters that he faced.
Alfredo Simon lost his fourth game
of the season pitching five innings and giving up five hits and four runs with
two of them being earned. He walked one
and struck out four. Hoover pitched an
inning giving up four hits and three runs with a strikeout, Contreras pitched a
perfect inning and Diaz pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Brett Gardner had a hit and three
RBI, Derek Jeter had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Brian McCann had a
hit. Beltran had two hits and an RBI,
Roberts had two hits and Johnson had two hits and two RBI. Beltran hit a homerun and the Yankees were
4-9 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.
Billy Hamilton had a hit, Todd
Frazier had two hits and Devin Mesoraco had a hit. Brayan Pena had a hit, Chris Heisey had a hit
and an RBI and Donald Lutz had a hit.
Lutz and Hamilton each hit a double and Heisey hit a homerun. The Reds were 0-7 with runners in scoring
position and left six men on base. Frazier
had a stolen base, Bruce committed an error and Mesoraco had a passed
ball.
Beltran hit a solo homerun in the
second to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. In
the third Gardner hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. Heisey hit a solo homerun in the fifth to cut
the lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the
fifth Gardner hit a sacrifice fly and Jeter hit an RBI single to push the
Yankees lead to 4-1. In the sixth
Johnson hit a two run single and Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 and
that would be the final score.
The Yankees have taken the first
two of the three game series and look for the three game sweep on Sunday
afternoon.
