New York Yankees rally falls short in 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 4-3.  Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and struggled.  The bullpen was very good and Jacoby Ellsbury and Ichiro Suzuki each had two hits. 

Kuroda pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up nine hits and four runs with no walks and five strikeouts.  David Huff pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and striking out one, Chase Whitley pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out two and Rich Hill pitched 1/3 of an inning striking out the only batter he faced.  Esmil Rogers pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk, Josh Outman retired the only batter that he faced and Shawn Kelley retired the only batter that he faced.  David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts. 

Chris Archer pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and three runs.  He didn't walk a batter and struck out three to earn his ninth win of the season.  Grant Balfour pitched 2/3 of an inning, Brad Boxberger pitched an inning striking out two and Jake McGee saved his 17th game of the season.  He pitched a perfect inning. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and an RBI, Brian McCann had a hit and Ichiro Suzuki had two hits.  Stephen Drew had a hit, Chris Young had a hit, two RBI and Ellsbury hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-5 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.  Suzuki had a stolen base. 

Ben Zobrist had two hits and an RBI, David DeJesus drew a walk and Evan Longoria had a hit and an RBI.  James Loney had three hits and two RBI, Matt Joyce had a hit and drew a walk and Kevin Kiermaier had two hits.  Ryan Hanigan had two hits, Kiermaier hit a double and Loney hit a homerun.  The Rays were 3-13 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Joyce had a stolen base  and Kiermaier was caught stealing.  Joyce and Myers each had an outfield assist. 

In the second Loney hit a solo homerun to give the Rays a 1-0 lead.    In the third Longoria hit an RBI single, Loney hit an RBI single and it was 3-0 Rays.  Zobrist hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 4-0 game.  Ellsbury hit a solo homerun in the fourth to make it 4-1.  Young hit a two run single in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3 but that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of three on Wednesday night.
