The New York Yankees lose and tie
in a couple of split squad games
The New York Yankees tied the
Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota on Thursday afternoon and they were defeated by
the Toronto Blue Jays at home in Tampa on Thursday afternoon. The final scores were 4-4 and 11-4. In the home game Nathan Eovaldi made his
spring debut and pitched well, Aroldis Chapman also made his debut and
struggled with his control. Starlin
Castro had three hits and three RBI to lead the offense against the Orioles. In the away game Bryan Mitchell started and
pitched pretty well. Carlos Beltran had
a couple of hits to lead the offense in the home game.
In the home game Eovaldi pitched
two perfect innings. Andrew Miller
pitched an inning giving up four hits and two runs and he struck out two,
Dellin Betances pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Chapman pitched
2/3 of an inning giving up a run with two walks and he struck out one. Diego Moreno pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up
three hits and five runs with four of them being earned. He walked one and struck out two, Tyler Cloyd
pitched an inning giving up a hit and Vinnie Pestano pitched an inning giving
up three hits and two runs with a strikeout.
Tyler Webb pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run.
Pete Kozma drew a walk, Beltran had
two hits and an RBI and Alex Rodriguez had an RBI. Mark Teixeira drew a walk, Brian McCann drew
a walk and Santiago Nessy had a hit.
Chris Denorfia had a hit, Cesar Puello had a hit and Jonathan Diaz had a
hit and two RBI. Dustin Fowler had a
hit, Ben Gamel had a hit and Fowler and Puello each hit a double. Diaz hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-4
with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Diaz committed an error.
In the third inning Josh Donaldson
hit a two run single giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. In the third Beltran hit an RBI single to cut
the lead to 2-1. Rodriguez hit an RBI
groundout to tie the game at two. In the
fourth Diaz hit a two run homerun to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. In the fifth Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI walk
to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3. In the
sixth David Adams hit an RBI double to tie the game at four and then Domonic
Brown reached on a throwing error and a run scored and Andy Burns hit a two run
homerun to make it 8-4 Blue Jays. In the
eighth Brown hit an RBI triple and Burns
hit an RBI double to make it 10-4 Blue Jays.
The scoring was complete in the ninth on a Adams RBI double. The Blue Jays won 11-4.
In the road game against the
Orioles Mitchell started and pitched three innings giving up four hits and a
run with two strikeouts. Kyle Haynes
pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Anthony
Swarzak pitched an inning giving up two hits and he had a strikeout and Jamez
Pazos pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and three unearned runs. He walked one and struck out two, Chad Green
pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Richard Bleier pitched a perfect
inning with a strikeout. Brady Lail
pitched an inning striking out one.
Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits, Mark
Payton had a hit and Rob Refsnyder had a hit.
Castro had three hits and three RBI, Aaron Hicks had a hit and an RBI
and Juan Silva had a hit. Chris Corporan
had a hit, Slade Heathcott had a hit and Kyle Higashioka had a hit. Castro hit a double and the Yankees were 2-9
with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Castro, Jorge Mateo and Tyler Austin each committed an
error. Corporan had a pickoff.
In the first Castro hit an RBI
double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
Hicks hit an RBI groundout to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first Adam Jones hit a
solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1. IN
the fifth Castro hit a two run single to make it 4-1 Yankees. In the seventh Hyun Soo Kim hit an RBI single
to cut the lead to 4-2. Steve Tolleson
hit a two run single to make it a 4-4 game and that is how it would end. The Yankees record on the spring is 2-6-2.
