New York Yankees defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates with a late onslaught


The New York Yankees defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday afternoon.  The game took place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the final score was 11-5.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and he pitched ok, the bullpen was pretty much outstanding.  Ronald Torreyes led the offense with four hits but Starlin Castro and Chris Carter each hit huge homeruns. 

Pineda pitched five innings giving up five hits and three runs with two walks and six strikeouts.  Jonathan Holder pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a strikeout, Tyler Clippard pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Dellin Betances picked up his second win of the season pitching to two batters and retired them both.  Bryan Mitchell pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning with a walk and he struck out one. 

Jameson Taillon pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs.  He walked three and struck out four.  Juan Nicasio pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run, Wade LeBlanc pitched to one batter and retired him and Felipe Rivero took his first loss of the season pitching 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and four unearned runs with a strikeout.  Antonio Bastardo pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Aaron Hicks had a hit and drew two walks and Chase Headley had a hit and an RBI.  Castro had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk, Aaron Judge had two hits and an RBI and Austin Romine had two hits.  Torreyes had four hits and two RBI, Carter had a hit and three RBI and Judge, Torreyes, Hicks and Headley each hit a double.  Castro, Carter and Judge each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 5-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Hicks had a stolen base. 

Adam Frazier had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Josh Bell had a hit and drew a walk and Andrew McCutchen had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks.  David Freese had a hit and an RBI, Francisco Cervelli had a hit and Jordy Mercer had a hit and an RBI.  Taillon had a hit, Cervelli hit a double and McCutchen and Freese each hit a homerun.  The Pirates were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  McCutchen had a stolen base, Frazier and McCutchen each committed an error. 

McCutchen hit a solo homerun in the first to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Freese hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 2-0.  In the fifth McCutchen hit a sac fly and it was 3-0 Pirates.  Castro hit a three-run homerun in the sixth to tie the game at three.  Torreyes hit a two-run double and the Yankees had a 5-3 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth Mercer hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4.  Frazier hit an RBI single to tie the game at five.  In the eighth Carter hit a three-run homerun to give the Yankees an 8-5 lead, a wild pitch made it 9-5 and Headley hit an RBI double to make it a 10-5 game.  Judge hit a solo homerun in the ninth to make it an 11-5 game and that would be the final score.   

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon.  The Yankees will have off on Monday and then head to Boston for a three game series beginning on Tuesday night.
