New York Yankees take rubber game against the Oakland Athletics


The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 9-5.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  The Yankees offense got two hits from Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge and Ronald Torreyes to lead the way. 

Pineda pitched six innings giving up three hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked three and struck out five and won his sixth game of the season.  Chad Green pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts, Tommy Layne pitched to one batter and retired him and Adam Warren picked up his first save of the season pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings. 

Andrew Triggs pitched six innings giving up six hits and six runs with only one of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out three and lost his fourth game of the season.  Josh Smith pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts and John Axford pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had a hit and two RBI, Sanchez had two hits and an RBI and Matt Holliday drew a walk.  Starlin Castro had a hit, Judge had two hits and four RBI and Didi Gregorius had a hit.  Aaron Hicks had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Chris Carter had an RBI and drew a walk and Torreyes had two hits and drew a walk.  Sanchez and Gardner each hit a double and Judge hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Hicks had a stolen base and he was caught stealing.  Pineda committed an error and Gardner had an outfield assist. 

Jed Lowrie drew two walks, Khris Davis had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Yonder Alonso had a hit.  Ryon Healy had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Matt Joyce had a hit and drew a walk and Alonso hit a double and Davis hit a homerun.  The Athletics were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Joyce and Phegley each committed an error. 

In the second Healy hit a two-run single to give the Athletics a 2-0 lead.  Hicks hit a sac fly in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the third Judge hit a grand slam to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.  In the fourth Carter hit a sac fly and it was 6-2 Yankees.  The A’s cut the lead in the sixth on a fielding error and the score was 6-3.  In the seventh Sanchez hit an RBI double to push the lead to 7-3.  Davis hit a two-run homerun in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-5 and in the bottom of the eighth Gardner hit a two-run double to make it 9-5 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees took two out of three in the series and will head to Baltimore to begin a three game series on Monday afternoon.
