New York Yankees defeat the Washington Nationals


The New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals on Monday night.  The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. and the final score was 4-2.  Sonny Gray started for the Yankees and he pitched pretty well, the bullpen was great and Giancarlo Stanton had four hits and two RBI to lead the offense. 

Gray won his fifth game of the season pitching five innings and giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and seven strikeouts.  Jonathan Holder pitched an inning with two strikeouts, David Robertson pitched an inning with a walk and a strikeout and Dellin Betances pitched a perfect inning with three strikeouts.  Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and saved his 21st game of the season. 

Erick Fedde pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts.  Fedde lost his second game of the season.  Tim Collins walked the only batter that he faced, Wander Suero pitched an inning giving up a run and a walk with a strikeout and Sammy Solis pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk.  Shawn Kelley pitched an inning with a walk and Matt Grace pitched an inning giving up a hit. 

Aaron Hicks had two hits and two RBI, Aaron Judge drew two walks and Didi Gregorius had a hit.   Stanton had four hits and two RBI, Gleyber Torres had a hit and drew a walk and Greg Bird drew two walks.  Austin Romine had a hit, Neil Walker drew a walk and Hicks and Stanton each hit a double and Hicks hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  Judge had a stolen base and Gregorius was caught stealing. 

Adam Eaton had two hits, Trea Turner drew a walk and Anthony Rendon had two hits and drew a walk.  Juan Soto had two hits, Mark Reynolds had two RBI and Daniel Murphy had a hit.  Michael Taylor drew a walk, Rendon and Murphy each hit a double and the Nationals were 0-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Suero committed an error. 

In the first Stanton hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Reynolds hit an RBI ground out to tie the game at one.  In the fourth Reynolds hit a sac fly giving the Nationals a 2-1 lead.  In the fifth Hicks hit a two-run homerun to give the Yankees back the lead at 3-2 and in the seventh Stanton hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees lost the completion of the suspended game first 5-3 and they now split the brief two-game series just like they did in New York.  They will return home to take on the Mariners for a three-game series.
