New York Yankees lose a close one to the Washington Nationals


The New York Yankees lost to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 5-4.  Sonny Gray started and he didn’t pitch very well.  The bullpen did pretty good and Giancarlo Stanton had three hits and Greg Bird two to lead the offense. 

Gray pitched five innings giving up seven hits and four runs with two walks and a strikeout.  Chasen Shreve lost his first game of the season pitching two innings and giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, David Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one and Jonathan Holder pitched an inning giving up a hit. 

 Erick Fedde pitched five innings giving up six hits Jand four runs with a walk and three strikeouts.  Justin Miller pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out four and he won his fourth game of the season, Sammy Solis pitched to one batter and got him out and Ryan Madson pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and he struck out one.  Sean Doolittle saved his 17th game of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Aaron Judge had a hit and an RBI and Didi Gregorius drew two walks.  Stanton had three hits and an RBI, Bird had two hits and an RBI and Gleyber Torres had a hit and an RBI.  Judge and Bird each hit a double and Bird and Torres each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Gardner had a stolen base and Gregorius was caught stealing.  Gardner had an outfield assist and Gray had two pickoffs. 

Adam Eaton had three hits, Trea Turner had two hits and Anthony Rendon had an RBI.  Daniel Murphy drew a walk, Matt Adams had three hits and Juan Soto had two hits, four RBI and drew a walk.  Eaton hit a double and Soto hit two homeruns.  The Nationals were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.  Turner had a stolen base and Taylor was caught stealing.  Soto and Turner were picked off and Kieboom committed an error. 

In the first Rendon hit a sac fly giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first Judge hit a sac fly to tie the game at one.  In the second Bird hit a solo homerun giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.  In the third Stanton hit an RBI single to push the lead to 3-1.  In the fourth Soto hit a two-run homerun to give the Nationals a 4-3 lead.  In the fifth Torres hit a solo homerun tying the game at four.  In the seventh Soto hit his second homerun of the game to give the Nationals a 5-4 lead and that would be the final score. 

The two teams split the brief two-game series and will play again on Monday in Washington to finish a suspended game and then another game after.  The Yankees will remain at home and begin a four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.
